About Namtso in Tibet

Namtso is located between Damxung County and Nagqu Bangor County in Lhasa, about 200 kilometers northwest of Lhasa. It is the highest saltwater lake in the world, with an altitude of 4718m, 70km long from east to west, and 30km wide from north to south. With an area of ??1920km2, it is the largest lake in Tibet and a holy place in the eyes of pilgrims. "Namtso" means celestial lake, spiritual lake or sacred lake. The five islands in the lake stand out among the vast expanse of blue waves. Buddhists say that they are the incarnations of the five Buddhas. Anyone who goes to the sacred lake to pay homage to the Buddha will do so devoutly. Worship. Believers say that every year in the Year of the Sheep, all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Dharma-expanding gods gather in Namtso to set up an altar and hold a Dharma assembly. Going to worship at this time and walking around the lake to chant sutras once is better than going to the lake to chant sutras 100,000 times in normal times. The blessings are immeasurable. Therefore, every year in the Year of the Sheep, monks and believers have to travel long distances to Namtso Lake. Around April 15th of the Year of the Sheep in the Tibetan Calendar, there are huge crowds of believers and the event is unprecedented. This holy lake in the hearts of Tibetans attracts believers from local Tibet and Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, and Yunnan to travel thousands of miles away every year to complete the arduous journey in search of soul transcendence.

The best time to travel

To travel to Namtso, you must rush into the rainy season from June to September every year. From October to November, Namtso will be inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. The weather from November to May is cold and dry, making it unsuitable to enter the Tibetan Plateau.

1. Generally choose to join a group; advantages: cheap and convenient, disadvantages: not free to follow fixed routes;
