The Diaoyu Islands have been China’s inherent territory since ancient times, and the waters near the Diaoyu Islands are also China’s traditional maritime territories, over which China has indisputable sovereignty. The China Meteorological Administration is responsible for managing meteorological information, forecasts and warnings on land, rivers, lakes and seas across the country. The meteorological department has a long history of providing meteorological services to the Diaoyu Islands and surrounding waters.

Providing weather forecasts for the Diaoyu Islands and surrounding waters is an important responsibility of the China Meteorological Administration and an important responsibility assigned by the World Meteorological Organization to the National Meteorological Center as one of the regional professional meteorological centers. The Diaoyu Islands and surrounding waters are areas prone to various marine disasters and are also traditional fishing grounds for Chinese fishermen. For a long time, coastal meteorological departments in Fujian and Guangdong have played an important role in guiding typhoon prevention and disaster reduction, maritime fishery production and transportation by providing timely and accurate marine meteorological forecasts.

Since September 11, 2012, the Central Meteorological Observatory has issued weather forecasts for the Diaoyu Islands and surrounding waters in domestic city forecasts, including temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall and other meteorological elements. In addition to being broadcast on CCTV, the forecast will also be released through the Central People's Broadcasting Station, China Meteorological Administration portal, China Weather Network, China Meteorological News, Marine Meteorological Radio and other channels.

The China Meteorological Administration provides the Diaoyu Islands (district station number 58981, longitude 123°28'E, latitude 25°44'N, altitude 362 meters) through the national weather forecast shared database from 0 to 168 Hourly weather forecast products are available for national public sharing and external release. In addition, the China Meteorological Administration will continue to improve the level of refined weather forecasts including the Diaoyu Islands and surrounding waters based on the needs of all parties.
