In which season do sandstorms often occur in China?

Sandstorm weather mainly occurs in winter and spring, because there is little precipitation in winter and spring in semi-arid and arid areas, the surface is extremely dry and loose, and the wind erosion resistance is very weak. When strong winds blow, a lot of dust will be entrained in the air, forming sandstorm weather.

Spring sandstorms are mainly distributed in the northern region, with southern Xinjiang basin, central and western Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, northern Gansu and western Tibet as frequent areas. The number of sandstorm days is generally about 5 days, and some areas exceed 10 days. Winter sandstorms are mainly distributed in most parts of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, central and western Gansu, Ningxia and central and western Inner Mongolia. The number of sandstorm days is generally 1~2 days, and in some areas it is more than 5 days.

Spatial Distribution of Sandstorms in China

China's sandstorms mainly occur in the northern region, among which southern Xinjiang basin, southwestern Qinghai, western Tibet, central and western Inner Mongolia and central and northern Gansu are the most frequent areas, with annual sandstorm days exceeding 10, and southern Xinjiang basin and parts of western Inner Mongolia exceeding 20 days. There are still 3~ 10 days in Junggar basin, Hexi corridor and parts of northern Inner Mongolia.

Southeast of Northwest China, south-central and eastern North China, Huanghuai, central and western Northeast China and parts of Xinjiang, Qinghai, Sifang, Hubei and other provinces (regions) are less than 3 days.

The maximum distribution law of annual sandstorm days is basically consistent with the distribution of annual sandstorm days. More than 30 days in southern Xinjiang basin, central and western Inner Mongolia, Ningxia and north-central Gansu, and about 60 days in some areas. In addition, there are frequent sandstorms in western Tibet, which can last for 40 to 50 days in some areas.
