What does strong convective weather mean?

Severe convective weather refers to convective gale (≥ 17.2m/s), hail and short-term heavy precipitation (≥20mm/h) accompanied by thunderstorm, which is one of the disastrous weather with great destructive power.

The formation of strong convective weather is influenced by many meteorological factors, such as the sudden change of air humidity and temperature and atmospheric disturbance. Once these factors suddenly change or are affected by atmospheric disturbance, strong convective weather may form. Its spatial scope is generally very small, only tens of meters to more than ten kilometers, or more than ten kilometers to two or three hundred kilometers, and its life course is very short, usually lasting only one to ten hours.

Strong convective weather can cause great destructive power in a short time. Among them, convective gale may cause disasters such as trees lodging and building damage, while hail may cause damage to crops. Short-term heavy precipitation may lead to urban waterlogging, mountain torrents and other disasters, causing great losses to people's production and life. Therefore, the forecast and early warning of severe convective weather is very important for social construction and the safety of people's lives and property.

Matters needing attention in severe convective weather

1. Avoid going out: When strong convective weather comes, try to avoid going out, especially thunderstorm weather, and avoid staying in dangerous areas such as open areas, water surfaces or highlands.

2. Pay attention to lightning protection: in thunderstorm weather, pay attention to lightning protection, and try not to stand on high places, under trees or beside metal buildings to avoid being injured by lightning.

3. Prevention of rainstorm: In rainstorm weather, attention should be paid to preventing floods, especially residents living in low-lying areas, and they should be moved in time to avoid being flooded.

4. Pay attention to driving safety: in strong convective weather, pay attention to driving safety, slow down and avoid accidents such as vehicle sideslip or rollover caused by rain or accumulated water.

5. Take protective measures: In strong convective weather, take protective measures, such as wearing lightning arresters, raincoats and rain boots, to protect yourself from dangerous factors.
