Today's news comes from CNN's report on the floods in Indonesia:

Floods in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia caused 13 deaths and 40,000 people were displaced.

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)-Severe floods in northern Indonesia have killed at least 13 people and forced tens of thousands of people to leave their homes in recent days, authorities said on Thursday. Indonesia's National Disaster Reduction Agency (NDMA) said that landslides and rising floods cut off several villages in an area of North Sulawesi province, leaving about 1 000 residents trapped. According to NDMA, heavy rains began to hit the area on Tuesday, causing about 40,000 people to leave their homes and seek temporary shelter. Authorities say most of the deaths in North Sulawesi were reported on Wednesday and two people are still missing. Most parts of the area were cut off and communication lines were interrupted. NDMA said that four major rivers are flooding in Manado, the provincial capital. NDMA spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that this year's floods are much more serious than before. The agency is working with the military, police, search and rescue agencies, the Indonesian Red Cross and other groups and volunteers to help thousands of people affected by the flood. On Mindanao in the southern Philippines, about 500 kilometers (320 miles) north of North Sulawesi, heavy rains have caused deadly landslides and floods. According to the Philippine authorities, since the weekend, a low-pressure area has hit parts of Mindanao with wind and rain, killing 26 people and displacing more than 200,000 people. Indonesian authorities said that this weather system, together with another weather system in northern Australia, helped to produce heavy rain in North Sulawesi.
