1987, three students in Yuan Longping discovered a special photo-sensitive sterile rice in the experimental field of Anjiang residual rice. It was also in this year that Yuan Longping once again put forward the development strategy of hybrid rice.

1987, a scientific research team with the theme of two-line hybrid rice began a nationwide collaborative research. After 9 years' efforts, the yield and quality of two-line hybrid rice are better than that of ordinary rice, and the technology of two-line hybrid rice in China has maintained the world leading level.

1997, Yuan Longping put forward the model of improving photosynthetic efficiency of high-yield hybrid rice, which started the research of super hybrid rice in China. At that time, it was a world super problem. However, Yuan Longping's team has been persistent in tackling difficulties, and finally created a high-yield record of 1 137.5 kg per mu in Yongsheng, Yunnan. After that, the first phase of super hybrid rice was promoted to 30 million mu.

Following the success of the first super hybrid rice, Yuan Longping team also started the research on the second, third and fourth super hybrid rice. Finally, in September of 20 13, the fourth super hybrid rice demonstration field achieved a record of 988. 1 kg per 100 mu, which is a world record and has made great contributions to the world hybrid rice level in China.
