Hotan City is located at the southernmost tip of Xinjiang, between Karakorum Mountain and Taklimakan Desert, with geographical coordinates of 79 50 ′ 20 ″ to 79 56 ′ 40 ″ east longitude and 36 59 ′ 50 ″ to 37 ″ north latitude14 ′ 23 ″.
The total administrative area is 585 square kilometers. Hotan is located in the southwest of Tarim Basin, in an oasis beside the Yulong Kashi River (Hotan River). The neighboring rivers are Kriya River, Niya River and Yatongguzi River. Taklimakan Desert in the north and Kunlun Mountain in the south.
Hotan City is high in the south and low in the north, wide in the north and narrow in the south, and inclines from south to north. It is the alluvial plain of Karakash River and Yulong Kashi River. The altitude is between1300-1450m.
