1. TUD official website:
). I believe everyone who has lived in the Netherlands has deep feelings about this. The blond people with long legs and blue eyes walking around on the street are basically Dutch natives. Correspondingly, their home living facilities and the basic modulus of urban supporting facilities should have obvious changes. For example, the height of bicycles, street seats, and the height of kitchen tables all have corresponding "loads". Transformed (grew taller).
(TUD logo)
For architecture students, TUD is another important label in the Netherlands. TUD, the full name of Delft University of Technology (Technische Universiteit Delft/Delft University of Technology), is located in Delft. It is the oldest, largest and most extensive technical university in the Netherlands.
(Specialized to deal with Party A’s dissatisfaction. “I graduated from Delft University of Technology. To save time, let’s assume that I am always right”)
QS 2019 Ranked 52nd in the world university rankings, including 3rd in the world for architecture, 4th for civil engineering, 4th for mechanical aviation and manufacturing, 10th for chemical engineering, and 10th for environmental science 16. Its majors cover almost all fields of engineering science and is truly one of the world's top engineering universities. In the 2020 QS World University Rankings, Delft University of Technology's ranking has made a breakthrough, with the school ranking 50th. Among them, architecture moved up one place and ranked second in the world.
In order to give you a more comprehensive introduction to the Department of Architecture and Design of Delft University of Technology (TUD) in the Netherlands, we have specially developed a special topic *** 6 articles to introduce it. There are many articles on the Internet that rationally introduce TUD from a subject perspective. Here we mainly start from personal feelings and provide some new ideas for friends who want to come to school here. Because it is mostly based on personal feelings, it is inevitably biased. Happy reading everyone!
Then let’s start the first article of this topic, introducing TUD’s School of Architecture environment, campus facilities and Dutch customs.

Delft, where the school is located, is located between Rotterdam and The Hague. It has a very small area of ??only 24.08 Km2. Generally speaking, it is a small city that can be easily traveled around by bicycle. Chinese friends all I like to jokingly call it Daimura.

("Girl with a Pearl Earring", hidden in The Hague)
Daimura has two important labels, one is Daimura Delft Blue porcelain. When I first arrived in the Netherlands, I often saw blue and white porcelain that looked like fakes in Dutch museums. After reading the explanations carefully, I discovered that this was Delft’s local specialty blue porcelain. It was indeed made by imitating Chinese blue and white porcelain, and now it has become a famous product of the Netherlands. One of the national treasure specialties. One is the famous painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring". Delft is the happy hometown of the painter Vermeer.
2. School of Architecture BK City
“You need to give creative people amplespace and at the same time put them on a long lead. Managing creativity is one of the most difficult things . It implies a willingness to bend the rules, makemistakes, accept unfinished ideas and to live with ambiguity and chaos."?
- Manfred Kets de Vries
(BK City bird's eye view) < /p>
BK City is the new department building of the Institute of Architecture. The original department building in Berlageweg was destroyed by a fire in 2008.
The city government provided emergency funding to renovate the iconic building complex in Julianalaan as the new department building of the TUD School of Architecture. Although the old building was designed for chemical engineering students. However, after emergency updates, the exposed building structure pipelines, large-scale public communication spaces, bright colors, and designer furniture all highlight the identity of the new owner. When I was working on my graduation project, one of the instructors talked about the architectural environment and atmosphere, using the example of the School of Architecture. “Even if there is no Architecture sign, when you walk in, people will know that this is the School of Architecture.”
The name BK City can be broken down into two parts to understand. BK is the abbreviation of the Dutch Bouwkunde, which means engineering. It can be reflected from the side that the teaching of the Department of Architecture of TUD pays more attention to the construction of internal logic and order, and form is not the focus. The word City comes from the complete supporting facilities of the building itself.

The circulation lines on the 0th floor connect Berlage Zaal, ICT services, various student organizations, model rooms, restaurants, bookstores, print shops, Orange Tribune/Orange Room, coffee bars, bars, etc., which is City The most important street in the city.
(BK internal small library)
In addition to these public facilities on the 0th floor, there is a small library on the 1st floor, which contains department-related subjects. Collecting books is very suitable for self-study. In addition, each corridor in the building is equipped with coffee machines, microwave ovens, vending machines, printers and rest sofas. To put it simply, every department of the School of Architecture is actively creating perfect learning and living spaces for future architects, urban planners, landscape designers, etc. BK City is truly worthy of its name.

The Orange Hall mentioned here , is a classic of MVRDV. Master lectures are often held here, and it is also the first choice place for everyone to take graduation photos.

(Bouwpub)
The biggest difference from other architecture school facilities is that Punk BK has its own bar, Bouwpub. Bouwpub is open twice a week. Every time it is open, no matter it is windy or rainy, the house and the small square outside are full of people. Everyone stands in a group in twos and threes. The products sold are actually ordinary alcohol and drinks, but everyone can always get drunk. Go back with a smile on your face and enjoy yourself. Every time after class, as long as the Bouwpub is open that day, the conversation after school will change from "Have a nice evening!" (Wish you a beautiful evening!) to "See you in Bouwpub!" with an excited voice (later in the bar) See you!) In addition, BK holds a large-scale disco party - BK Beats every two years. At that time, the entire building will be transformed into a large disco hall, and each hall will have a different theme. Tickets are hard to come by, so friends who love disco dancing don’t miss it.
BK City offers undergraduate, master's and doctoral programs, but the undergraduate courses are only taught in Dutch; while the master's and doctoral programs are much friendlier and are taught entirely in English.
There are five master’s programs in 1***:
- Architecture
- Urbanism
- LandscapeArchitecture
-Management in the Built Environment
-Building Technology (BuildingTechnology)
Not surprisingly, because of the professional counterparts, the former The three projects are the most chosen by domestic students. Comparing the academic system in China, the Dutch architecture department lasts 3 years for undergraduates and 2 years for postgraduate students, so this 3+2 academic system is actually approximately equal to the domestic undergraduate academic system. Taking the urban planning major as an example, TUD does not have an urban planning major in its undergraduate program (most European schools do not have an urban planning/design major in its undergraduate program), so European students in this major basically have an architectural background, while in China, they basically have a five-year undergraduate degree. A two-year professional system, the first three years are devoted to architecture and the last two years are devoted to planning. But overall, even after five years of studying in China, you can often get great value for money at TUD.
The specific professional introduction, studio introduction, graduate design introduction and industrial design department (io) introduction require a long length. We will explain them in detail in the next few articles.
3. Library?

(Library) < /p>
When the department library is closed on weekends and I want to study on my own, I will unconsciously walk to the library. TUD's library design comes from Mecanoo, a local Delft firm. It is famous for its huge ecological grass roof. The entire building is hidden under the green grass roof. At the top of the mountain is a conical pyramid. The conical pyramid is decorated every festival. Various patterns will be projected on it. When the weather is nice, the big lawn is an excellent place to bask in the sun. Especially after staying in the library all morning, the moment you walk out of the library carrying your lunch box, your footsteps will unconsciously walk on the lawn.

The middle cylinder is a self-study space. The vibrations become stronger as you get to the top floor. As long as someone goes upstairs, they will feel the vibration clearly. In addition, due to the structure of the barrel, sound propagates extremely quickly. I can clearly hear the problem-solving ideas discussed by the girl next door and my teammates. Although there are ground floor, underground silent study rooms, and some independent reserved study rooms to choose from, I am very stubborn and prefer this gray wall-facing space.
When the school first started, one of the welcome activities organized by the school was to watch an outdoor movie near the big lawn. Thinking about it this way, time passed so fast. Now that I think back to the cool breeze that night, I still feel... Gives people goosebumps.
4.?X-TU Delft?
Tired of studying and want to exercise and relax? I rode south along the central axis of the campus where the cherry blossoms were blooming. I followed my friends who were carrying sports equipment along the way. When I saw a small square with a large number of bicycles parked on the right hand side, I arrived at X-TU Delft.
(Inside X-TU Delft)
(Sports, culture and entertainment courses provided by X-TU Delft)
The renovated sports and cultural center is also the sports center that everyone often mentions. Located on the south side of the campus, it takes about 8 minutes by bicycle from BK City. The renovated Sports Center is fully equipped and divided into three areas: entertainment, sports and catering. Both TUD and non-TUD friends can apply for monthly, quarterly, or annual passes as needed. Of course, the discounts for students of our school are even greater. In addition to the usual gyms, badminton courts, outdoor football fields, tennis courts, piano rooms, drum rooms, etc., there are also yoga, Zumba and other courses to choose from, and even psychological counseling, massage, e-sports, and amateur jewelry. Design, manicure courses, and skiing courses can all be found here. Oh, by the way, there is also an outdoor skating rink in winter. In short, there are many kinds of ice rinks, so there is always one that suits you.
5. Transportation
(Photo: Li Zhiyuan)
(People riding bicycles)
In the Netherlands, bicycle culture is very popular , ranging from 99 to just able to walk, almost everyone has a bicycle. Correspondingly, bicycle lanes are almost as important as roadways, and supporting facilities such as parking racks and bicycle traffic lights are very complete. There are large (underground) bicycle parking garages near train stations in various cities in the Netherlands, and the scene is very spectacular. At the same time, there is also a bicycle rental and bicycle repair business.
Firstly, the cities in the Netherlands are very small and the streets are relatively narrow. However, bicycles can win out among the many modes of transportation and reach the destination easily; secondly, the public transportation prices in the Netherlands are It’s a bit expensive. A one-way bus trip in the village costs almost RMB 8-12, so everyone is happy to ride a bicycle, which saves money and keeps fit. Coupled with the environmental protection trend in recent years, the Dutch people who pursue practicality first The practice of low carbon is carried out rain or shine, so you can often see people in the Netherlands wearing raincoats and waterproof schoolbags all year round, so that they can ride freely even in rain or snow. When I first arrived in the Netherlands, my classmates joked with me that how to quickly identify Dutch students from other European students was to see if they owned a Rains waterproof jacket.

(Near Delft Railway Station)
Connections between cities tend to rely more on rail transit. Since the Netherlands is below sea level and underground engineering is too expensive, trams and trains are more common.
6. Weather
(The correct way to open the Dutch weather)
The weather in the Netherlands is very bad, it is often windy and rainy. When the wind is strong, cyclists can be blown directly from the bicycle lane to the roadway, which is worthy of the title of the Netherlands' country of windmills.
When it rains heavily, it is unceremonious and rains on your face and body from all directions. After staying in the Netherlands for a long time, you will simply not hold an umbrella like the locals. Because it was discovered that an umbrella could not compete with the strong wind at all, so it was better to calm down and accept the test of nature. Dutch friends said that if you don’t like the windy and rainy weather in the Netherlands, you will be angry every day. Although I haven’t liked rainy days after staying for a long time, it makes people cherish the good weather. Every time the sun comes out, it makes people feel very happy in their hearts. They want to go out to bask in the sun. They wear sunglasses and lie on the grass. Letting go is a strange experience that I have never had before.

(Delft Lake)
The weather is very cool in summer, basically around 2℃, and occasionally hot. When the weather has just reached 20 degrees Celsius and it still feels a bit cold, Dutch students take out their suspender shorts at home and wear them, fearing that summer will sneak away if they are not careful. When I lived in prof, there was a small river next to the house. In the summer, I liked to take a slow walk along the river to Jumbo (supermarket) with my friends. Along the way, the water was sparkling, and I admired the handsome guys at the kayaking club on the other side of the river. After walking back, the sun went down, and I ate and drank in the kitchen with my friends. It was so happy. Oh, by the way, you must try the coconut-flavored cones at the ice cream shop in the city center square, which will make you more fond of summer.
7. Diet
Dutch locals don’t care about diet. They say they are functional eating. Eat just to fill your stomach, not to enjoy the food. This can also be seen in BK’s canteen. Not to mention that TUD's course schedule compresses lunch time very little. Most Dutch students don't care about lunch at all. They often eat various raw vegetables and fruits while drawing pictures.
Common supermarkets include AH (Albert Heijn), Jumbo, Lidl & Alidi. Basic supermarkets can meet daily needs. Hey, talking about Jumbo (supermarket), I am really familiar with it. Now when I am typing on the computer, I can think of Jumbo’s floor plan and food sections, as well as some happy moments when I went to the supermarket with my friends. For example, in the sausage area, three boxes of pineapple cheese are often sold for 5 euros. Just toast the bread and spread a large spoonful on the toast, which is delicious enough. There are also many salad boxes in the refrigerator on the left side of the Jumbo entrance. When I don’t want to cook, I come here to buy a few boxes and store them in the refrigerator. When I eat, I imagine that I have lost weight again today, and I am complacent. Jumbo’s own tiramisu, it’s no exaggeration to say that this tiramisu is the most authentic one I’ve ever had in Europe. It has a very rich rum flavor at the bottom and a thin layer of rum on top. The cocoa powder is very dense and has an endless aftertaste when you bite it.
(Photo: Wanting)
(Market)
If you feel that the variety of dishes in the supermarket is too single, you can also go to the market in the city center. The market is held twice a week, and it is so bustling. Every time I have nothing to do, I like to go to the market with my friends. Just looking at these self-contained fruits and vegetables with inherent order and beauty will make me feel good. , before leaving, take a handful of flowers home to replenish energy for the week, just in time to come back next week.
(Photographed by the proprietress of Dongfang Restaurant)
(Went to eat at Dongfang Restaurant on the day after graduation defense)
Dongfang Restaurant must promote TUD articles It occupies a place here, after all, it is the only Chinese restaurant in the city center. The boss is very nice. Even though her dishes are always criticized by everyone for having the same taste, I still like to go there. Every time we go to eat, we are very cordial and chat a lot in Mandarin and Cantonese. So when I often don’t know where to eat, Dongguan (Oriental Restaurant) becomes the best choice.
8. Humanities
(Tulips next to Delft train station)
There is a large tulip field next to the train station in the village. When the tulips are about to bloom, , as long as you pay one yuan, you can take home a few small Dutch flowers. It increases citizen interaction without waste, and can also trigger a wave of attention on social media. It is a very interesting case of urban management.
Walking along the train station to the city center, you can often see old people riding small electric cars. These small electric cars can climb high and low bridges, and can also enter supermarkets in the Netherlands. People feel particularly at ease. I think such a city can provide citizens with a convenient and dignified life. I think the happiness index of such a city is very high. Looking at the pedestrians on the roadside, especially in summer, a very strong feeling is: everyone is really very confident.
Although the Netherlands is often complained about as a fashion desert, girls regardless of their body shape, skin color, or appearance can confidently walk on the street wearing the clothes they like, and live a chic and comfortable life. They are often criticized when walking on the road. Moved by this love for myself.
(Photo: Wanting)
(Gay Pride in Rotterdam)
In addition, the Netherlands is also the first country to legalize gay marriage. Not only are grand Gay Pride parades held in various cities every year, but TUD also raises the rainbow flag on campus every year on Coming Out Day, sends emails to every student, and even provides lectures specifically emphasizing equal rights during the freshman activities at the beginning of the semester.
(Photo: Wanting)
(Cute duck)
Finally, this city is also very tolerant of animals, and humans and nature are in harmony get along. The little ducks in the picture are often encountered on the way to Jumbo. In the blink of an eye, they turn into big ducks that don’t have to queue for swimming.
(Photographed by Wanting)
(Sunset by the window)
The Netherlands is very concrete to me, each scene and each taste. , where sounds are superimposed one by one. I remember the two scary female ghosts near the lighting store in the city center every time. I remember the charming gym guy in the school sports center. I remember holding hands with you and crossing the street. I remember spending many weekends in the kitchen with my friends. I remember The delicious sweet potato fries across from Flying Tiger, I remember the beautiful flowers sold at the weekend market, the taste of my favorite Gin Tonic, and the ray of sunset hanging by my window. I can’t finish talking about it.
I don’t know if everyone has any closeness to the Netherlands and Delft after talking so much, or if they have any more yearning for TUD. I hope that when my neighbors read this public account and think of me next time, they can forget about flour and associate me with milk powder.
(Postscript: A friend read what I wrote and sighed: Wanting is also interesting. Holland’s memoir actually took up the largest space, and Holland was flattered.
Therefore, I would like to declare again that the Netherlands is a food desert, so don’t have high expectations, thank you)
