What are the methods of ocean forecasting?

Ocean forecasting methods can be roughly divided into two categories: empirical statistical methods and numerical calculation methods.

Empirical statistics is a method to establish the relationship between forecasting factors and various hydrometeorological factors based on historical data, and the main means is to use regression and statistical correlation.

The method of numerical calculation and prediction is to determine the future state of the ocean according to the solutions of hydrodynamic and thermodynamic equations. Numerical calculation method can reveal and analyze the physical essence of large-scale processes in the ocean and atmosphere, and is considered as a promising forecasting method.

Marine meteorological forecasting method is a method to predict and report the meteorological conditions in a specific time period and sea area. Marine meteorological forecast is an important aspect of marine meteorological service economy and society, and its formation and development are closely related to marine observation station network, meteorological monitoring network, marine and meteorological data transmission and communication.

Marine meteorological forecast originated from 1853 to 1856 after the Crimean war. 1856, the first conventional meteorological service system in France was established, and 1863 officially issued a storm warning to French ports.
