Although the temperature gradually warms up in spring, cold air from north to south can still invade Hunan frequently, resulting in a sudden drop in temperature, accompanied by strong convective weather processes such as strong winds, hail and heavy rain. After the cold air, the rain turned fine and the temperature rose quickly.

From late June to early July, the rainy season ended in most parts of Hunan except northwest Hunan, and the number of rainy days and rainfall decreased significantly. From July to September, the total rainfall in various places is mostly around 300 mm, which is less than half of the rainfall in rainy season. Coupled with the hot south wind and large evaporation, droughts often occur.

The inland river network in Hunan Province is dense and the water system is developed, with fresh water area of 1.35 million square kilometers. There is Dongting Lake in the north of Hunan, which is the second largest freshwater lake in China. There are four major water systems: Xiangjiang River, Zishui River, Yuanshui River and Lishui River, which flow from southwest to northeast into Dongting Lake and then into the Yangtze River through Chenglingji.
