Why do some Hakkas in Fujian choose Tulou as their house?

Because Fujian Tulou, as the name implies, is a building with raw soil as the main raw material, and Hakka people like to live in Tulou, which has to start from the historical source.

Tulou is the product of Hakka ancestors' inheritance and development of China traditional culture, and the crystallization of Hakka ancestors' wisdom from generation to generation. Others praised it as "a treasure of China culture and a model of harmonious coexistence between a big family and a small society". From the structure and distribution of tulou, we can also see the hospitality and enthusiasm of Hakkas.

Another meaning of earth building is "earth building", which is in contrast with modern "foreign building". Tulou is a low-rise building, giving people a primitive and warm feeling of home, which should be one of the reasons why Hakkas like to use Tulou as a house.

We are used to living in modern industrial high-rise buildings, and it is inevitable that we have some yearning for ancient buildings such as earth buildings.

There are three typical Hakka earth buildings: Wufeng Building, Square Building and Yuan House. Wufenglou is a mansion-style residential building, which is one of the important symbols for Hakka people to inherit the architectural culture of the Central Plains.

Wufeng Pagoda is a combination of "three halls and two falls", showing a well-defined architectural pattern with low front and high back. The square building is a corridor-style earth building with the ancestral hall as the center and rammed earth walls around it.

In ancient times, earth buildings still existed as fortifications in wartime and played an important role in resisting the invasion of enemies and thieves.

Round stockade, also known as round building, is related to the wind resistance requirements of local round stockade, battery and coastal areas in Fujian, with complex natural and cultural background. This is one of the reasons why Hakkas still like to call Tulou their home. It is natural, rich in history and culture, warm and firm.
