Located in the Yellow River Delta in northern Shandong Province, Emperor Taizong once camped here and set up Dongying and Xiying, hence the name.

Dongying Village was built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty.

196 1 April, North China Petroleum Exploration Office drilled the first exploration well near Dongying Village, and gradually formed a mining town around Dongying Village, which was called "base area".

In March, 1965, Dongying Working Committee and Dongying Office of Huimin District were established.

1983 establishing prefecture-level cities.

In 2003, Dongying was recognized as a national environmental protection model city by the State Environmental Protection Administration.
