What dialects are there in Xiaogan?
Xiaogan dialect is a representative local dialect in Chu language. Due to the special geographical location and historical conditions, Xiaogan dialect is eclectic, forming the characteristics of eclecticism between the north and the south.
Xiaogan dialect not only has the linguistic features of northern dialect, but also absorbs the linguistic features of southern dialect, and retains some archaic elements. Although Xiaogan dialect belongs to Southwest Mandarin, it is quite different from Hankou dialect, the representative of Southwest Mandarin. The initial consonants are more receptive to the north than Hankou dialect, and the vowels and tones are more southern.
The basis for expanding contemporary Chu language materials and dividing Chu language areas: linguist Zhao Yuanren: "This second area (referring to Huanggang and Xiaogan dialects) can be regarded as a typical Chu language." Zhou: Eastern Hubei has always been called the most' Chu Xiang Chu Se'. Whether Huang Xiao's films, that is, Chu language, belong to Jianghuai Mandarin is controversial.
Its phonetic features are quite different from those of Jianghuai Mandarin. For example, the entering tone is not a short tone, but a long tone, which is longer than other tones, which is absolutely not available in Hongchao and Tairu films in Jianghuai Mandarin. Another example is the photo of the ancient Fairy Mountain in Jianghuai Mandarin, which is generally divided into two or three parts according to the main vowel, while the photo of Fairy Mountain in Huang Xiao's film has only one main vowel, just like Mandarin.
In listening sense, Huang Xiao's films are also very different from Jianghuai Mandarin. Mainly distributed in eastern Hubei, Huanggang and Xiaogan in the northeast, north of the Yangtze River and south of Dabie Mountain. The third part of Atlas of Chinese Language Mandarin points out that the main characteristics of Huangxiao film in Jianghuai Mandarin are lack of books and seal scrolls.
