Anhui Normal University is the earliest institution of higher learning in Anhui. The school is located in Wuhu, a state-level open city with the reputation of "Huizhou charm and city of thousands of lakes". It is close to the vast Yangtze River and Lingxiu Zheshan Mountain. It is the epitome of natural beauty in the south of the Yangtze River and the soul of Anhui humanities. It is a university jointly established by the Anhui Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, and the national "Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in the Midwest". It is also a provincial-level key comprehensive university and Anhui Province, which is the key construction of Anhui Provincial Party Committee and Government.

The school's predecessor was the provincial Anhui University 1928 founded in Anqing. 1946 was renamed as National Anhui University, and 1949 moved to Wuhu in February. Later, it went through several stages, such as Anhui Normal University, Hefei Normal University, Southern Anhui University (inscribed by Comrade Liu Shaoqi) and Anhui University of Workers and Peasants. 1972, approved by the State Council, was officially named Anhui Normal University (inscription by Comrade Guo Moruo). In 2005, Wuhu Normal University was merged into Anhui Normal University.

There are more than 2,400 teaching and administrative staff in the school, including more than full-time teachers 14 10, more than 8 10 professional and technical positions above the subtropical high school, 3 national teaching teams, 6 national candidates for the "100 million talents project", 7 talents supported by the Ministry of Education in the new century and 5 distinguished professor, a "Wanjiang scholar". There are 2.85 million books and more than 600 rare books, among which Zheng Yun of Hongwu collected by Ming Jiajing is the only complete book in China, Tongzhi and Complete Works of Li Taibai and Du Gongbu are rare books in China, and the collection resources are basically digitized. The school has Anhui Normal University Press, which edits and publishes various academic journals and newspapers such as Journal of Anhui Normal University, Journal of College Counselors, Learning Chinese and Anhui Normal University Newspaper.

The school is one of the first universities in China to be allowed to recruit foreign students at public expense, and it is also the national Chinese education base and the Anhui Chinese international promotion center.
