Extended data
The geographical conditions in California are very different: the desert in the south is dry, and the coastal areas in the north are often flooded in winter because of too much rain and snow. Less than 140 kilometers apart, there are Mount Whitney at an altitude of 44 18 meters and Death Valley at an altitude of 86 meters, which are the highest and lowest points in 48 States in the United States respectively. The coast is mountainous. The coastal mountains are 20-40 miles wide and 2000-8000 feet above sea level.
California is dry in summer and sunny and rainy in winter. Affected by geographical conditions, the climate varies greatly. In summer, the temperature in the southeastern Colorado desert reaches 54℃, which is close to the highest temperature on the earth. In winter, the Sierra Nevada is as cold as the North Pole. But the temperature along the Pacific coast is generally not higher than 32℃ and not lower than 0℃. The average temperatures in Los Angeles and San Francisco are 18℃ and 14℃ respectively.
