Ludian is a place name in Yi language. Lu (Nuo) is the appellation of Yi people, and Dian (Di) means flat water grass dam, which means flat dam where Yi people live. In ancient Ludian, there was Zhuti Mountain, which was famous for producing silver, and was called Zhuti Silver.
