Under the guidance of the guide, the reconnaissance company of the First Army Corps of the Red Army, regardless of the fatigue of marching for several days in a row, went straight to Xiaoxiangling overnight and bypassed the enemy from the side. The enemy was wiped out by the reconnaissance company before he could resist.

After the Red Army's vanguard troops occupied Xiaoxiangling Mountain, Peng Can, the county magistrate of Yuexi County and the Minister of National Defense of the Kuomintang, found that Xiaoxiangling's telephone was disconnected and knew that the situation was not good. He hurriedly took two companies on the defensive and their families and fled to Hanyuan before dawn. Some landlords and gentry also fled to Yi Nationality Village in the surrounding mountains with their families and valuables. Peng Can fled to Haitang Town, Ganluo County the next afternoon, and was captured alive and executed by the vanguard troops of the Red Army.

The Red Army descended from the mountain and successively occupied Tao Jiaying, Zhongsuo and other places. At noon on May 22nd, several Red Army troops on horseback took the lead in entering Yuexi County. When they saw the people, they smiled and said, "Don't be afraid, we are the Red Army, and we are dedicated to doing good things for the poor." Around two o'clock, the Red Army entered Yuexi County one after another, first opening the prison and releasing the Yi and Han people and hostages who were detained. Then, the Red Army broke down the filing cabinet of the puppet county government and burned all the books and documents of the reactionary government.

Since ancient times, Yuexi has been the traffic artery. The ancient "Southern Silk Road" and the modern "chengdu-kunming railway" line run through the territory, giving the Yi culture in Yuexi an opportunity to communicate with other cultures and forming its own unique cultural form.
