Why does the skin on my hands turn dark red when the weather is cold?
The cause
is the body’s abnormal response to cold. Chilblains are localized skin inflammation caused by cold in winter or early spring. It usually occurs on the distal and exposed parts of the limbs, such as hands, feet, nose tip, ears, earlobes and cheeks. Modern medicine believes that chilblains are caused by the poor cold tolerance of the patient's skin, coupled with the invasion of cold, which causes the peripheral skin blood vessels to constrict or spasm, leading to local blood circulation disorders and tissue damage caused by insufficient oxygen and nutrition. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that this disease occurs because the patient's Yang Qi is insufficient and exogenous cold and dampness causes the Qi and blood to flow poorly and blood stasis to block the disease.
As we all know, the hands, feet and auricles are the peripheral parts of the human body’s blood circulation and are also prone to frostbite. After late autumn, the temperature suddenly drops, and the blood flow in the peripheral blood vessels also becomes slow. When the temperature is lower than 10 degrees Celsius, the subcutaneous arterioles in the above-mentioned parts shrink when exposed to cold, resulting in poor venous return, resulting in chilblains. There are also some patients who suffer from chilblains due to congenital variations and stenosis of blood vessels leading to poor blood flow. Therefore, to prevent chilblains, we should focus on its pathogenesis and take measures in advance, which often has the effect of getting twice the result with half the effort.
Symptoms
Most commonly occur in peripheral parts such as hands, feet, cheeks, and auricles. The skin lesions are pruritic, localized edematous erythema with unclear boundaries, and blisters, erosions and ulcers may occur. Chilblains initially appear as localized broad bean to fingernail-sized purple-red lumps or indurations, with bright red edges and bluish-purple center. They are cold to the touch and fade when pressed. Recovery is slow after the pressure is removed. There is a sense of local swelling and itching, which worsens when exposed to heat. Worse, severe cases may have blisters, which may rupture and form ulcers that may not heal for a long time.
