Described by New Zealand writer rewi alley as "the most beautiful town in China", Fenghuang Ancient City is located in the southwest of Xiangxi, Hunan. It is a gathering place of ethnic minorities, mainly Miao and Tujia, 430 kilometers away from Changsha, the provincial capital, and about 40 kilometers away from Jishou, the nearest city.

The ancient city was built in Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty and is famous for Shen Congwen's novel Border Town. Qingshi Street in the city, the diaojiao building by the Tuojiang River, numerous ancient buildings and rich Miao customs constitute the unique flavor of Xiangxi.

The ancient city is surrounded by mountains and waters, and the Tuojiang River passes through the city. Red sandstone walls stand on the shore, and South Huashan is flanked by towers of the Qing Dynasty. On the river under the north gate, there is a narrow wooden bridge with stone piers, which used to be the only way out of the city. The main attractions included in the ancient city package are: Shen Congwen's former residence, Xiong Xiling's former residence, Yangjia Ancestral Hall, Dongmen Tower, Ancient City Museum, Chongde Hall, boating on the Tuojiang River (about 20 minutes downstream), Wanshou Palace, Hongqiao Art Building, and Shenfeng Scenic Area of South China Mountain.

Tuojiang River is the largest river in Fenghuang County. For tourists, Tuojiang River is a section near the wall of Fenghuang Ancient City. The most common way to visit the Tuojiang River is "boating on the Tuojiang River" (the fee has been included in the pass of Fenghuang Ancient City). You get on the boat from the dock near the north gate and go downstream to Hongqiao outside the east gate. The whole journey takes about 20 minutes. On the way, you can also hear the boatman's horn and folk songs duet.

The Tuojiang River is green and clear, and the Tujia Diaojiao Building with a history of 100 years on both sides of the river has a unique charm. The south bank of Tuojiang River is an ancient city wall made of purple sand. The city wall has two towers, the east and the north, which are still spectacular after vicissitudes. There are many scenic spots such as Wanshou Pagoda, Wanming Pagoda and Duocui Pagoda near the east gate of Tuojiang River, and Tiaoyan near the north gate of Tuojiang River is one of the main passages in and out of Fenghuang Ancient City in Northeast China, which is the best scenic spot to photograph the beautiful scenery of Tuojiang River. Here, the diaojiao buildings on both sides, the Hongqiao opposite, and the ships coming and going can all be included in the lens.
