On August 20 18 12, a small spaceship the size of a car began its incredible journey on the surface of the sun. The Parker solar probe designed by NASA to penetrate the sun's atmosphere is about 4 million miles away from the sun's surface, which is closer to our star than any other spacecraft.
Parker solar probe was launched by Delta IV heavy rocket L of United Launch Alliance.
Initial data loss of Parker solar probe
In four related studies published in the journal Nature, the researchers showed the data collected by the probe during its first two contact with the sun. These analyses reveal the source of the elusive slow solar wind and show how the change of magnetic field accelerates the solar wind.
These data were collected at the end of 20 18 and in March and April of 20 19, when the spacecraft was about 0.25 astronomical unit (AU) away from the sun. An astronomical unit is the approximate distance between the earth and the sun, which is about 93 million miles, so the detector is only 23.25 million miles away from the sun. This distance seems far away, but it is the artificial celestial body closest to the sun at present.
Nasa's Parker solar probe mission is closer than any previous artificial celestial sun.
In one study, researchers focused on the observation of solar plasma by detectors and found that with the reversal of solar magnetic field, the speed of solar wind leaving the core of the sun accelerated.
The second study focuses on high-energy ions and electrons emitted by the sun. They are more abundant near the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere. The results show that these particles are accelerated by sudden radiation or plasma from the corona itself.
Parker solar probe can do more.
For a long time, scientists have been trying to understand the magnetic period of the sun 1 1 year. In this period, the north and south poles of the solar magnetic field basically have exchange points. Observations show that at the end of the solar cycle, solar activity will increase, and more high-energy flares and radiation will be injected into space, which is what we call the solar wind.
In the past, the study of solar wind was carried out at a distance of one astronomical unit. However, the orbit of Parker Solar Probe will get closer and closer to the sun, and eventually it will reach a distance of 4 million miles from the surface of the sun, providing unprecedented new details for the mysterious activities of the sun.
This micro detector carries a large number of instruments for measuring solar wind, particles, magnetic field, solar radio emission and corona structure.
By better observing the corona, scientists hope to solve another of the biggest mysteries of the sun. For many years, they have been troubled by the extreme temperature of the corona. The extreme temperature of the corona can be as high as 654.38+0 million degrees Celsius, while the surface temperature of the sun is 5700 degrees Celsius lower than this.
The solar exploration mission will also help scientists make more accurate predictions about space weather. Space weather refers to solar wind and coronal ejection, both of which will have a direct impact on satellites, and more importantly, on human space flight activities.
Scientists hope to establish a better weather forecast model by measuring the composition of space weather more closely and accurately, and predict whether the sun will produce abnormal radiation, so as to prevent our scientific instruments from being hit.
The probe is currently in the third orbit, about 15 million miles from the surface of the sun. If these new data can be used as a basis, we will get more exciting discoveries as the spacecraft gets closer and closer to the sun in the remaining 2 1 orbit.
