When to plant leeks?
The planting time of leeks is after winter, and they can be sown at any time after the soil thaws until the autumnal equinox.
Generally from late March to early May, it is better to sow in spring and earlier rather than later in summer. And because leeks are perennial vegetables, they are very suitable for sowing in autumn. Therefore, in some areas, the planting time of leeks is after September.
Farmer friends can also sow seeds in autumn. This phenomenon usually occurs in greenhouses. Because drought and lack of rain are prone to occur in autumn, although the weather is cooler, the air humidity is relatively low. At this time, attention should be paid to the amount of seeds used when sowing leeks, so as to ensure the emergence rate and survival rate. In the south, there are often more weeds when planting leeks in summer and autumn, so weeds must be removed in time to ensure the nutritional supply of leeks in the field.
Notes on planting leeks
1. It usually takes 10 to 20 days from seed germination to the first true leaf to grow. The suitable temperature for germination is 15~18℃, the lowest temperature is 2~3℃, and it will not germinate if it exceeds 20℃.
2. The ability of leeks to unearth is weak, so pay attention to the thickness of the soil.
3. Fertilization rules for leeks: The growth amount and fertilizer consumption of leeks are small in the seedling stage, but the growth amount and fertilizer demand are large during the peak vegetative growth period, especially the spring and autumn harvest seasons, so fertilization should be applied in large quantities in stages. . Leeks that are 2 to 4 years old grow vigorously, have strong tillering ability, high yield, and require the largest amount of fertilizer, which is the peak demand for fertilizer. Leeks that are more than 5 years old gradually enter the aging stage. In order to prevent premature aging, more fertilization is needed.
4. After the seedlings are unearthed and the true leaves are released, the root system gradually increases. When the seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, you can add fertilizer once, and water them in time after fertilization. When the seedlings have 4-5 leaves, they can be fertilized again. The amount of fertilizer applied is basically the same as the first top dressing. During the seedling stage, fertilizer can be applied once every 20 days or so, and drainage should be carried out to prevent waterlogging to keep the border dry and wet.
5. Timely top-dressing: Start top-dressing after transplanting is successful. Top-dressing once every 5-6 days until harvesting begins. After that, top-dressing can be done once or twice per harvest. Do not fertilize during bolting and fertilize after flowering to promote tillering. Apply once a year when harvesting leeks is stopped. When the leeks sprout 2 to 4 centimeters, apply organic fertilizer once in conjunction with cultivating soil. When fertilizing, nitrogen fertilizer cannot be applied alone. The time is controlled to apply 3 to 4 days after each harvest of leeks when new leaves grow. After nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are fully mixed, apply them according to the ridges and furrows.
