Geographical environment of Shangri-La in Diqing

Diqing, which means "auspicious place" in Tibetan, is located in the northwest of Yunnan Province, on the southern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, at the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet provinces, with an east longitude of 90 35'-10019' and a north latitude of 26 52'-29 6544. With a total area of 23,870 square kilometers, it governs Shangri-La, Deqin and Weixi Yi Autonomous County with a total population of 334,000. The state capital of Autonomous Prefecture is located in Jiantang Town, Shangri-La County, 706 kilometers away from Kunming, the provincial capital.

Diqing is the only Tibetan autonomous prefecture in Yunnan Province and one of the ten Tibetan autonomous prefectures in China. Diqing Prefecture belongs to the south extension of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the southwest hinterland of Hengduan Mountains, with high terrain in the north and low terrain in the south. Three mountains in the territory are surrounded by two rivers: Meili Snow Mountain, Yunling Snow Mountain and Zhongxue Mountain, and Lancang River and Jinsha River run through the whole territory from north to south. The average elevation of the state is 3380 meters, and the area above 3000 meters accounts for 53% of the total area of the state, which is the highest administrative region in Yunnan Province.

Kawakarpo, the highest peak, is 6740 meters above sea level, which is the highest peak in Yunnan. The lowest elevation is1480m, with a relative elevation difference of 5260m. The climate of this state belongs to temperate-cold temperate zone, with an annual average temperature of 4.7 C-16.5 C, an annual extreme maximum temperature of 2510 C and a minimum temperature of 2740 C.. The solar radiation is strong, the dry and wet seasons are distinct, and the stereoscopic climate is obvious.

The special natural geographical environment has formed Diqing's wonderful natural landscape and rich resources. Diqing is one of the most important resource-rich areas in Yunnan Province. It has six resource advantages such as forest, biology, hydropower, animal husbandry, minerals and tourism. Diqing Prefecture is one of the largest forest areas in Yunnan Province, with rich forest resources and various types. The state's forestry land is1610.5 million hectares, the forest stock reaches10.57 billion cubic meters, and the forest coverage rate is 36.4%.

The main varieties are spruce, redwood, fir, alpine pine, yew, torreya grandis, Yunnan pine, Platycladus orientalis, Toona sinensis, Hong Tong, Pinus armandii, hawthorn, Hypericum, Eucommia ulmoides, Quercus variabilis, camphor tree, tung tree and various azaleas.

Because a mountain is divided into four seasons and the three-dimensional climate is obvious on different days, Diqing is rich in biological resources such as plants, animals and microorganisms. There are 2 183 species of higher plants, including more than 960 species of medicinal plants. There are more than 60 species of wild animals under national first-class and second-class protection, and the fungal resources are rich, reaching 147 species.

Animal husbandry has a long history and broad prospects. There are 910.3 million mu of grassland in Quanzhou, accounting for 210.6% of the national territory, of which 6.29 million mu of grassland can be used, ranking first in the province and being the largest natural pasture in Yunnan. Livestock mainly include cattle, yaks, yellow cattle, sheep and pigs.

Geographical location: Diqing is located at the junction of Yunnan, Tibet and Sichuan provinces (regions), in the middle and upper reaches of Jinsha River and Lancang River, bordering Qamdo in Tibet in the north, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan in the east, Lijiang in the south and Nujiang in the west.

Landscape: Diqing's natural geographical features should be summarized as "Three Gorges, Two Rivers and One Dam". The "Three Mountains", namely Nv Mountain, Yunling Mountain and Gongga Mountain, run through the north and south in parallel, and Meili Snow Mountain, Baimang Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain stand at the summit. The "two rivers", namely Jinsha River and Lancang River, are 430 km and 320 km respectively in Diqing, and their drainage areas account for 70% and 30% of the state's land area respectively.
