What causes edema in legs and feet?
Varicose veins in the lower limbs may cause swelling. Swelling caused by cardiovascular system and kidney disease often starts in the ankles. A chronic disease caused by disorders of the skin and subcutaneous lymphatic vessels is called cutaneous lymphangiopathy. The lymphatic vessels at the lesion site lose their transport capacity, causing lymphatic stagnation. This results in severe disturbances in protein and water metabolism in tissues. Cutaneous lymphangiopathies eventually turn into so-called rubbery diseases. This refers to the frequent swelling and severe deformation of the lower limbs, mainly the feet.
Sometimes swelling can occur without any disease. It may be caused by bruises and dislocations. In addition, excessive physical load, second to third grade flat feet, abnormal lymphatic vessels, walking or standing for a long time, and improper sitting posture can cause edema: such as sitting on a high chair with your feet not touching the ground; crossing your legs; sitting on a chair that is too low On a chair; if the shoes don't fit well, your feet will become swollen. Pregnant women and patients with varicose veins are prone to edema. After rest, the swelling will subside. When the weather is hot, edema will increase.
What should I do if my legs and feet are swollen? For prevention and treatment, you can do the following:
1. Do not change shoes within a day.
2. Do easy leg exercises every day to eliminate tension and promote blood circulation.
3. After using your legs and feet for a long time, you must rest. You can massage or gently caress. It should be noted that the massage or caressing must start from the feet.
4. When there is swelling, use elastic bandages or elastic stockings to protect the swollen parts during the day.
5. When sleeping at night, raise your legs.
6. Do a simple foot exercise often. While watching TV, you can roll a ball or stick with your toes.
7. Skiing and swimming have very good therapeutic effects.
8. Reduce salt and water intake.
9. After finishing housework every night, lie on your back on the ground, stand with your legs up high, lean against the wall, and stay there for 10 minutes.
10. Do not carry heavy backpacks or wear high heels.
If the edema still does not subside after rest and treatment, and the edema area becomes hard and the skin temperature rises, you must go to the hospital to see a doctor.
