What if the dog is going to have a baby?

The care of pregnant bitches is as follows:

1. Diet: Female dogs can increase their feed by 30-50% after 5-6 weeks of pregnancy, and it is advisable to eat a small amount of food. The nutritional requirements of pregnant bitches should focus on the proper supply of high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals.

2. Excretion: Some bitches constantly excrete green secretions during pregnancy. This is a substance produced by the placenta, which is a normal phenomenon and its secretion will decrease in the last two weeks. Many such green secretions can be seen in the placenta during childbirth.

3. Exercise: Pregnant bitches need exercise, but it is not advisable to do too much turning and rolling. In the late pregnancy, she can take a short routine walk, let the dog decide his own pace, and don't make him too tired.

Preparation before production:

Long-haired dogs should use sharp knives to trim the hair near their breasts, so that newborn puppies can find nipples to suck, and also trim the hair of the anus and vulva to avoid disorderly delivery. After the expected date of delivery, please contact the veterinarian for examination.

Signs of childbirth:

1. In the last week of pregnancy, the temperature of the bitch will be slightly lower than normal (38 degrees), that is, the temperature will drop to 36 degrees 24 hours before labor.

2. The development of breasts is very different. Some dogs have breast development and have milk in the last month, some have milk during production, and some even have breast dysplasia and insufficient milk, so they must be artificially fed.

3. Most dogs refuse to eat or only choose some foods they like 24 hours before delivery, and some bitches vomit before delivery.

4. A few hours before delivery, green mucus will suddenly be discharged, indicating that the placenta begins to separate from the uterus.

Midwifery preparation:

1. Veterinary emergency call phone number

2. Paper towels and old newspapers

3. clean towels.

4. disinfectant.

5. Sterilize cotton and scissors.

6. Bitches use clean bedding.

Delivery:

Bitches can usually handle the delivery of puppies without your help. You can do some recording work, including the first stage of labor, green mucus output, labor pains, birth time, placental output and so on.

The first stage: cervical dilatation

Some bitches have no obvious symptoms at this stage, and some last for 3-24 hours. Bitch has short-term needle pain and uterine contraction, and the first child is squeezed into the pelvic cavity, so that the placenta enters the cervix and stimulates the cervix to open. Bitch looks uncomfortable and restless. If the mattress is rearranged, the bitch may show pain and rapid heartbeat.

Stage 2: Fetal expulsion

The time required for this period depends on the number of puppies, which rarely exceeds 6 hours, and many puppies rarely exceed 12 hours. When the first-born dog enters the pelvic cavity, the pain gradually strengthens, lasts longer and has higher frequency. When the labor pains are strongest, the bitch will straighten her hind legs to urinate. The amniotic fluid sac comes out first, the bitch bites the sac and lubricates the birth canal with amniotic fluid. When the bitch lies down and cleans herself, the pain will be stronger every time. Don't rush to help him, please observe from a distance. Some neurotic bitches need their owners' company, but most bitches don't want to be disturbed. When puppies are born, the head comes out first, accounting for about 60%, and the backward part accounts for 40%.

Birth of the first puppy: the bitch who gave birth for the first time gave birth, and her first puppy was born about 3-4 hours after the onset of labor pains. When the puppy is born, the bitch will lick the whole body of the puppy, take out the placenta and eat it, and bite off the umbilical cord. Stimulated by the cleaning action, the puppy begins to inhale the first breath of air and start to find nipples to suck. The placenta of the puppy is discharged with the discharge or within 15 minutes, but it is often discharged with the birth of the next puppy.

Birth of other puppies: The second puppy will be born in about two hours. If it takes more than two hours, call the vet. The following puppies have shorter birth intervals and more litters (12- 14). Bitches often rest 1-2 hours in the middle of production. For the bitch that has been produced, the whole production process will be smoother and faster.

Stage 3: Placental discharge

Placenta is usually discharged within 15 minutes after the puppy is born, often with the birth of the next puppy. Bitches often vomit or diarrhea after eating placenta. You can collect and clean up some placentas to ensure that the number of placentas discharged is the same as that of excellent dogs born. If the number of placental trees discharged is less than that of puppies, or if there is suspected placental retention in the birth canal, please contact a veterinarian for treatment.

Midwifery:

If the bitch is not responsible for cleaning the newborn puppy, you can help clean the placenta wrapped outside the puppy, clean the nasal cavity and respiratory tract, and scrub the puppy with a clean bath towel. Don't dry all the mucus on the puppy, leave some for the bitch to lick dry. If you clean up the puppy, he may reject it. Don't take the newborn puppy away from the bitch. You can simply wash the puppy a little, and then return the puppy to the bitch, which can help bring the puppy's face to the bitch's breast to rub the breast and find the nipple to suck.
