How high is Gongga Mountain?

Gongga Mountain is 7556 meters above sea level.

Gongga Mountain is located between kangding city, Luding, Shimian and Jiulong counties in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. In Tibetan, "Gong" means ice and snow, and "Ga" means white, a white iceberg. The main peak of Gongga Mountain is 7556 meters above sea level, which is the highest peak in Sichuan Province. Known as "Shu king of the hill", it is one of the highest peaks in the world. Gongga Mountain starts from Zheduo Pass in Kangding in the north, east of Tianwan River in Luding in the south and Yalong River in Dadu River in the west.

Gongga Mountain Scenic Area centered on Gongga Snow Mountain is the largest scenic spot with the largest environmental capacity in China. Under the action of long-term glaciers, mountain peaks develop into cone-shaped tinder, surrounded by cliffs of 60 ~ 70 degrees, which is difficult to climb. Gongga Mountain has glaciers such as Hailuogou, Wang Ba, Yanzigou and Mozigou, plateau lakes such as Mugecuo, Wuxuhai and Bawanghai, and hot springs such as Kangding Erdaoqiao. It is also one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world.

It is surrounded by snow-capped mountains such as Xiaogongga Mountain, Jiazi Peak, Riwuche Peak and Ledoman Peak. In addition, Gongga Mountain is also the highest mountain in the world, with a relative height difference of 6200 meters (the highest mountain from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain). Ice collapses are extremely frequent, surrounded by cliffs, and the narrow ridge is like an inclined blade. The slope is steep, the rocks are exposed, and the slope is more than 70 degrees. Moreover, there is a great difference in height. Fiona Fang's 20km altitude difference is more than 6000m, so its difficulty lies in the changeable weather and steep route.

The scientific research value of Gongga Mountain;

The National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station of Gongga Mountain Forest Ecosystem in Sichuan was established in 1987. It is one of the field observation stations of China Academy of Sciences and Chengdu Institute of Mountain Disaster and Environment of Ministry of Water Resources. It is located in Hailuogou on the east slope of Gongga Mountain. It consists of 1600 m Moxi base station, 3000 m alpine forest ecosystem observation station and Chengdu analysis and testing center. This is a mountain hydrology and climate research center.

There is a relatively perfect monitoring and research system for the changes of multi-level ecosystem, climate zone spectrum and marine glaciers in the vertical vegetation zone spectrum of mountainous areas. Gongga Mountain is the largest marine glacier action area in Hengduan Mountain System and the southeast edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and it is also one of the most active mountain glaciers in the world at low latitudes. In the past 40 years, generations of researchers have alternately relayed at experimental stations to capture the subtle changes in alpine climate, glaciers and forest ecosystems.
