Cold wave definition

The definition of cold wave is the intense cold air activity that polar regions or frigid zones invade low latitudes.

First, the main features:

In the northwest desert and loess plateau, it is characterized by less wind and snow, which is easy to cause sandstorm weather. In Inner Mongolia grassland, it is windy, snowy and cold. In North China and Huanghuai areas, cold waves are often accompanied by snow and snow.

In the northeast, it shows more violent winds and heavy snow, and the snowfall is the highest in the country. Jiangnan is often accompanied by freezing rain. It can occur from September to May of the following year, concentrated in March-April, and it occurs in most parts of China.

Second, the formation reason:

China is located in the southeast of Eurasia. From China to the north, there are Mongolia and Siberia. Siberia is a very cold place. If you continue to go north, you will reach the northernmost part of the earth-the North Pole. It is colder than Siberia, and the cold period is longer. It is from those places that the cold wave affecting China formed.

Because the temperature in the Arctic and Siberia is very low, the density of the atmosphere will increase greatly, and the air will continue to shrink and sink, increasing the pressure. This will form a strong, deep and broad cold and high-pressure air mass. When this cold and high-pressure force increases to a certain extent, it will flood into China like a tide that has burst its banks. This is the cold wave.

Harm of cold wave

1, the harm to agriculture:

Due to severe cooling, when the temperature drops below 0℃ (freezing point), the plants of overwintering crops will be frozen and lose all physiological activities, leading to plant withering or death. Strong winds or accompanying snowfall will blow down or crush scaffolding and livestock pens in facility agriculture.

2. Harm to traffic:

Strong winds can derail the train, even overturn and capsize the ship, which makes the aircraft prone to accidents such as tire rupture and landing gear fracture during take-off and landing. Rain and snow will threaten the flight safety of aircraft. The freezing phenomenon caused by rain and snow, low visibility and low temperature will have adverse effects on transportation.

3. Harm to power communication:

The freezing rain brought by the cold wave will fill the wires with rain. Wires contract when they freeze, and the vibration caused by strong wind and the influence of rain weight can make wires and communication lines break, which leads to the interruption of power transmission and communication.
