"Collection of Essays of Yuanyuantang"

Feng Zikai’s prose is simple, quiet, natural and straightforward. Although most of what he writes is about trivial matters around him, he attaches great importance to the "big things in the small" and the "overtones" in his works, so there is often a sense of emotion between the lines. Poetry, or containing philosophy of life, has always been loved by readers. Whether you like it or not, just come and take a look.

① In the novel "Traveler" (Japanese name: "Grass Pillow") by the Japanese writer Natsume Soseki, there is an article like this: "I am afraid that there will be no more things like trains that can represent the civilization of the twentieth century." Put hundreds of people in the same box and suddenly take them away without mercy. Many people who are packed into boxes must all run to the same station at the same speed and enjoy the blessing of steam in the same way. Others said taking the train, but I said loading it into the train. Others said that I took the train, but I said that I was transported by the train. There is no such thing as a train that despises individuality.

②When I translated this novel, I laughed at Mr. Natsume’s stubbornness and sympathized with his mood. In the 20th century, I am afraid there will be no such people who value individuality so much and dislike material civilization so much. Yes, there is another me, and I feel the same as him. From my hometown Shimen Bay to Hangzhou, it only takes one hour by boat and one hour by train. But I often take a passenger boat, take the canal, spend the night in Tangqi, walk it for two or three days, go to the Henghe Bridge, and then take a rickshaw to Tianjiayuan's apartment. This apartment is like my "palace", with a male servant constantly looking after it. At that time, I had no real job and relied entirely on writing at home to make a living. Although I was not rich, I could still afford it.

③ Passenger ships are a unique type of ship in our water town. In a water town, rivers extend in all directions. This environment makes people pampered. They have to take a boat for three to five miles and refuse to walk. Passenger ships are the most exquisite, and the equipment on board is excellent. It is divided into three parts: the stern, the cabin, and the bow, which are separated by wooden walls. The stern of the boat is where the boatman works, and cooking is also done here. The cabin is where guests sit, and other items are placed on the bow. There is a couch and a small table in the cabin, with glass windows on both sides and seating boards under the windows. The small table was usually placed in the corner of the cabin, with three short legs resting on the seat board and one long leg on the floor. If there are four people drinking together, the three short legs can be lengthened, and the four legs can be placed on the ground in the center of the cabin. This table is about two feet square, and a sparrow can also be used. There are calligraphy and painting frames on the partitions in the cabin, making it look like a small living room. This kind of boat can really be called a painting boat. This type of painting boat hire costs about one yuan a day. (The price of rice at that time was about two and a half yuan per stone.) My family had relatives in various nearby towns, and we often traveled by passenger ship. Therefore, the boatman regarded us as his old employer. But they are usually only hired for one day and do not stay overnight in the boat. Only when I go to Hangzhou can I book it for a few days.

④ After breakfast, put the bedding supplies into the boat and sail calmly. Enjoy your leisurely view of the scenery on both sides of the Taiwan Strait from the window. At noon, the boatman brought wine and food. Arriving at Tangqi in the evening, I went ashore to have a drink. Tangqi is a town. Its characteristic is that every house has a pergola built in front of its door, so it is not afraid of rain. There is a saying, "When it rains in Tangqi Town, don't get wet". The pronunciation of "Lin" is similar to "Lun", so if everything is not in turn, it is said to be "Rain falling in Tangqi Town". Let's talk about Tangqi's hotel, which has a special feature, that is, there are many types of wine and food but small portions. Dozens of small pots are listed, including meat and vegetables, dry and wet, sweet and salty, as customers choose. Only those who really drink wine can appreciate this kind of restaurant. If you are a strong man or a reckless man, like Fan Kuai or Lu Zhishen, you should not go to this kind of restaurant. They wolfed down the food, and the bowl of food and wine was not enough for one mouthful. You must be a so-called drunkard to be invited in. When a drunkard eats wine, he doesn't want the food to be plentiful, but he wants it to taste delicious. Take a bite of Huadiao and chew a piece of tender bamboo shoots, the flavor is endless. This kind of person is deeply in the samadhi of drinking, so he is called a "disciple".

Those who are addicted to gambling are called gamblers, and those who are addicted to drinking are called alcoholics. But loving wine is different from loving money, so drinkers should not be classified with gamblers. A monk is called a monk, and he is in the same category as a drunkard. I made these many comments just to show that I am a drinker, so I can appreciate the restaurants in Tangqi. I ate a pound of Huadiao and asked the restaurant to make a bowl of plain noodles, which made me drunk and full. After paying back the wine money, I walked out and went for a walk on the wet Tangqi Street. Tangqi loquat is famous. I bought some white sand loquats, returned to the boat, gave some to the boat girls, and then ate them myself.

⑤Eating loquats in the boat is a pleasant thing. To eat a loquat, you need to peel it, remove the core, get your hands dirty, and make the table dirty. After eating, you have to clear the table and wash your hands, which is really troublesome. There is no such trouble when eating loquats in the boat. Eat against the boat window, throw the skin and core into the river, and wash your hands in the river after eating. Taking a boat on a rainy day would be unpleasant elsewhere, but it is very interesting in Tangqi. Because don't get wet on the shore, it will not prevent you from getting ashore. Moreover, there is a kind of poetic interest that reminds you of the ancient sayings: "Everyone says Jiangnan is good, but tourists only like Jiangnan." The spring water is as green as the sky, and the boat is painted and sleeping while listening to the rain. ?Idle dream of the plum blossoms in the south of the Yangtze River, and the night boat playing the flute and the rain. ?When the ancients praised Jiangnan, they didn’t just talk nonsense, but they spoke it out of personal experience. Tangqi Water Town is one of the beautiful places in the south of the Yangtze River. I refused the train, a cultural product of the 20th century, and took the passenger ship to Hangzhou without any expense, which was actually not stubborn. The only person who knows me is Natsume Soseki?
