Cangzhou got its name because it is close to the Bohai Sea. In the second year of Xiping (517 AD), Emperor Xiaoming of the Northern Wei Dynasty, Cangzhou was established and administered three counties: Fuyang, Leling and Ande. Fuyang County was abolished in the early Sui Dynasty. Later it was divided into Hejian County, Bohai County and Pingyuan County. On August 1, 1949, the Hebei Provincial People's Government was established, with the Cangxian Prefecture, and the special agency was stationed in Cangxian Town, with jurisdiction over 11 counties. In June 1958, after Tianjin City was assigned to Hebei Province, Cangxian District merged with Tianjin District and was called Tianjin District, with the special agency stationed in Tianjin City. In September of the same year, Cangxian Town was renamed Cangzhou City (county level), and was subsequently merged into Cangxian County. . In early 1959, the Tianjin Prefecture was withdrawn and merged into Tianjin City. On June 1, 1961, the Cangzhou Prefecture was restored, and Cangzhou City (county level) was restored, with the special agency stationed in Cangzhou City. In December 1967, Cangzhou Prefecture was renamed Cangzhou Area. In December 1983, Cangzhou City was changed to a municipality directly under the Central Government of Hebei Province, and the administrative office and the municipal government were both located in Cangzhou City. In July 1993, the prefecture and city merged to form the current Cangzhou City, with the municipal government located in the Canal District.
