Zhuzhou, formerly known as Jianning, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province, the core city of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration and one of the cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Zhuzhou is located in the east of Hunan, downstream of Xiangjiang River, bordering Lianhua County, Yongxin County and Jinggangshan City in Jiangxi Province in the east, Hengyang and Chenzhou in the south, Xiangtan in the west and Changsha in the north. Zhuzhou City governs five districts, namely Tianyuan District, Lusong District, Hetang District, Shifeng District and Lukou District, and three counties, namely Youxian County, Chaling County and Yanling County, and manages Liling City. Zhuzhou is also a national green city, national health city, national civilized city and national garden city.

On September 2, 2020, it was rated as a national model city in transit metropolis by the Ministry of Transport. 202 1 1 29 was selected into the list of regions with remarkable achievements in 2020 announced by the Hunan Provincial People's Government. On February 24, 2022, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the Reply of the National Development and Reform Commission on Agreeing to the Development Plan of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Metropolitan Area, which officially approved the development plan of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Metropolitan Area.
