Graf, a college student in Vienna, Austria, was very depressed because he failed a course. At this time, he met Hickey.

Hickey works in a motorcycle repair shop nearby. He takes a notebook with him and writes a few strokes whenever he is inspired.

Two partners bought a second-hand motorcycle, left their studies behind and started a free road trip.

Graf is a loafer and doesn't make plans. Basically, all the operations are under Hickey's command.

Hickey's plan is: no plan.

First, don't want a map, don't think about where to go and when to come back. Just thinking about how to play. Think of mountains, beaches, rich people's windows, country girls. Go wherever there are girls, and go whichever way you go.

Second, take the road of wildlife.

Third, travel light. Just take a backpack, everything is stuffed inside, and the sleeping bag is hung outside. Take a fishing rod and fish in the mountain stream until you reach Italy.

They sleep in the wind, steal pots and salt from passing farmers' homes, fish in streams and sleep by the river at night.

The two invited the girl to ride a motorcycle together, and Graf sat in the back with her calf next to the exhaust pipe and was burned.

In menstruation's pub, they took off Graf's trousers, which had been in a coma, and soaked him in a big bathtub. Lun Jia took good care of him, and they developed feelings beyond their friends.

My aunt is full of doubts about these two boys. She doesn't know what they do, where they go and what their relationship is with their niece.

On a rainy day, the milkman came, and the driving horse slipped on the smooth pebbles, and even the car and people fell to the ground.

The milkman became angry and beat the horse violently. Hickey was furious and ran out to bite the milkman's neck. Graff managed to pull him away. The police came to arrest Hickey, who was hiding in the bathroom and could not get out.

Hickey jumped out of the bathroom window and ran away on his motorcycle. He said he wanted to know this place well.

Graf stayed in the hotel and became bait to catch Hickey. One night, Graf was taken to the mountain to collect beehives. When he went down the mountain, he met Hickey. On a dark rainy night, there was a car accident, Hickey died, and Graff was stung by bees all over his body.

A * * * has two parts. Part of it is Hickey's night trip to the zoo these days, and part is Hickey's family history. The two parts are interspersed, one or two pages about the zoo and a few pages about family history, perhaps because readers are afraid that they can't stand it.

Visiting the zoo at night is Hickey's activity after he escaped from his aunt's hotel.

When the park closes at night, he hides and doesn't go out. He observes the zoo at night. He felt that the night patrol security guards were too rude to animals and deliberately tortured them. He plans to open the zoo and release them.

Hickey's family history began during World War II.

Before World War II, Hickey's mother hilker and her grandparents lived in Vienna. Her mother has a boyfriend who is a part-time taxi driver in college. At that time, the world situation was surging, and the Nazi terror atmosphere was already quite strong.

The Prime Minister called on Austria to hold a referendum to let people vote on whether to establish an independent Austria or merge.

In order to welcome the Austrian referendum, Trummer, the farmer of a chicken farm in the suburb of Vienna, made a special dress. He sewed the tinplate with holes, smeared it with lard, and stained it with chicken feathers, making it "Eagle chain mail".

Trummer walked into the cafe in this strange dress and met his grandfather's family.

Under the pressure of Germany, of course, the referendum failed and the prime minister was changed. Grandfather led the whole family and Trummer, a chicken farmer, to leave overnight and go to his brother who was the postmaster in kaplun.

Mother's boyfriend, Chen, stayed in Vienna. He wanted to see what would happen in the next day or two, and then it was gone.

Next is the story of Hickey's father.

Hicky's father, Flatno, is a Yugoslavian, a linguist and can speak several languages.

The situation in Yugoslavia is particularly complicated, with Germans, Serbs, Croats, terrorists, Nazis, fascists, feudalism and guerrillas. . .

The Srivnica family is a member of a terrorist organization. They took advantage of Flatno's language talent and handed him over to the local German motorcycle patrol Wu Te.

Before the war, Woot was a professional motorcycle racer.

Flatno and Woot became good friends, or a mentoring relationship. He taught Walter how to drive a motorcycle.

The Srivinica family ordered Fratno to assassinate Woot, and Fratno and Woot jointly killed and blew up the car in which the Srivinica brothers were sitting. Then they fled on motorcycles and wandered in the deep mountains of Slovenia. Later, it was discovered by former patrol colleagues that Woot was killed.

At the end of 1944, Flatno crossed into Austria.

1945 In April, Soviet troops occupied Vienna. Flatno found an empty apartment and hid it. This apartment happens to be Hickey's mother's home.

After the war, Hickey's mother hilker, her grandparents and chicken farmer Trummer returned to Vienna and the apartment where she lived before the war. Hickey's parents met.

Lun Jia sells thick and long big braid in the barber shop. When they came to the zoo at night, it turned out that Graf had to finish what his best friend had not finished.

Graff let the animals get away and put the security guard in a cage. Lun Jia was scared to death.

People around us are making a fuss about catching animals with weapons.

Lun Jia and Graff ran to the suburbs. Lun Jia always yearns for city life. She wants to go to Vienna, but Graf wants to go to kaplun.

A couple parted ways here.

At this age, it is normal to hate schools, dislike hypocritical teachers, yearn for absolute freedom and adventure, have all kinds of strange ideas and do all kinds of strange things. We also came from this stage. But Hickey paid the price with his life. As the Yugoslav proverb says, "Coson Ning's grave, don't be a slave".

What they do is more like a performance art, a performance art that pursues freedom.

In their eyes, zoos are places where animals are imprisoned. To liberate animals and set them free, the price is their lives.

Some time ago, I also read another book by John Owen: The Rules of the Cider House.

His novel has a bizarre plot, jumping thinking and an unexpected ending. But it may be due to translation, which is not attractive.

Only in the second half of the story can it have a little connection with the title.
