Mian County man Zhu and two teenagers went to the woods along the Han River to hunt birds and illegally hunted the national first-class rare and endangered crested ibis. The 24-year-old Zhu is a farmer in a village in Mianyang Town, Mian County, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province. At about 21:00 on December 19, 2016, Zhu drove his own car and carried 15-year-old boys Chai and Yuan to the Han River for fishing. At about 23:00 that night, Chai thought fishing was boring and suggested going to the Wonsanzi woods on the bank of the Han River to hunt birds. Zhu agreed. Then he drove Chai and Yuan to the Yuanshanzi woods. Chai illuminated the lamp while Zhu shot birds into the woods with a slingshot. Zhu shot three times in a row but Zhu did not hit a single bird.

Zhu then instructed Chai to hunt birds, and Yuan lit the lamp. Chai hit it twice with a slingshot and killed a crested ibis. Knowing that he had violated the law, Zhu asked Chai to put the ibis in a plastic bag and throw it into the Han River. That night, the crested ibis thrown away by Chai was discovered by the patrol security of Mian County Yijiang Cross-bank Office and called the police. Zhu and others were arrested.
