1, night shooting skills

Nightscape of Dream City in Blue Tone

Shooting conditions: use lens TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II.

Shooting mode: automatic exposure with aperture priority (F8, 8 seconds)

Exposure compensation:-1.3EV

White balance: daylight

Sensitivity: ISO 100

The beautiful night scene after sunset is a fascinating theme. But the photos taken are always not ideal, which is far from what the naked eye actually sees. The key point of shooting night scenes lies in the choice of shooting time. It can be said that 80% of the photo quality depends on whether it is taken at the right time.

Taking a night view is different from seeing it with the naked eye. The ideal time to take a night photo is not in the real night, but in the evening when there is still a little skylight in the sky. At this time, the outline of the building has not completely disappeared in the night, and the blue and white light will make the tone of the sky look like a dream. If you wait until it is completely dark, there is only one point light source in the photo, which looks unsightly.

It is recommended to arrive at the shooting scene in the evening and observe the surrounding situation before dawn. Special attention should be paid to the safety of the shooting scene after dark and large billboards that are easily overlooked and may affect the shooting. Shooting should start when there is light in the sky, and the settings should be adjusted according to the change of light conditions. Use Av (Aperture Priority Auto Exposure) mode, and select an aperture of about F5.6-8. This aperture is conducive to improving the resolution and shooting a clear point light source.

In addition, when it is still bright, adjust the camera and determine the level of the picture. After dark, it is difficult to see the reference used to confirm whether it is horizontal or not, and it is also difficult to determine the correct angle. It's also a good choice to use a level meter, but it's hard to observe when the surroundings are dark. In order to make the subsequent shooting go smoothly, it's best to adjust the picture to a level in advance. The longest time period suitable for shooting is only 5 minutes, so everything needs to be ready before the ideal time comes.

Point 1:

Use negative exposure compensation

The reasonable exposure calculated by the camera when shooting at night is not necessarily good. Photographers need to use their eyes to determine the exposure parameters according to the actual effect. When there is still a little skylight in the surrounding environment, negative exposure compensation can be used to shoot the brightness similar to the night scene. In this way, lighting and natural light can achieve a good balance.

The second point:

Use the cable to release.

In order to prevent the camera from shaking when shooting night scenes, it is suggested to use cable release when pressing the shutter button without touching the camera directly. If there is no cable release at hand, you can also use the self-timer function instead. Setting the driving mode to delay the release of the shutter for 2 seconds can suppress the jitter caused by pressing the shutter button.

The third point:

Av (Aperture Priority Auto Exposure) mode or manual exposure mode?

The shooting mode can be Av (Aperture Priority Automatic Exposure) mode or manual exposure mode. When using Av (Aperture Priority Automatic Exposure) mode, exposure compensation can be used to shoot a scene near night. When using manual exposure mode, the same effect can be achieved by adjusting the shutter speed.

The fourth point:

When shooting through the window, put the lens close to the glass window.

If you shoot in an observatory with a glass window, you need to put the lens close to the glass in order not to shoot the reflection of the glass. Pay special attention to the people behind and the possible reflection of indoor lights.

When shooting night scenes, manual focusing is a safer focusing method. Especially when shooting through glass, due to the influence of glass, autofocus may not be able to focus accurately. The way to focus safely is to use the real-time display function to focus manually. The picture seen through the real-time display mode is the picture actually shot by the image sensor, and the photographer can directly observe the actual picture and enlarge the picture to focus accurately with little error. Only when focusing in real-time display mode, the LCD needs to be used all the time, and the battery consumption will be faster than expected. Therefore, when shooting in real-time display mode, it is recommended to prepare a spare battery.

Shoot night scenes and people

A shooting mode that combines night photography and portrait photography. It can shoot people and the background bright at the same time, which can effectively avoid the disadvantage that the background is completely black when the flash is shot.

Use lens: ef-s18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 isstm.

Focal length: 35mm

Portrait at night (F4.5, 1/25 seconds)

Sensitivity: ISO 800

White balance: automatic

The camera setting in night portrait mode consists of a flash and a low-speed shutter. Background darkening in flash photography is a phenomenon caused by high shutter speed. In order to get more background light, the night portrait mode uses a low-speed shutter, so this phenomenon can be effectively avoided.

In addition, in order not to make the shutter speed too low, the ISO sensitivity is set to automatic, and the camera can automatically select the ISO sensitivity according to the surrounding conditions. In order to focus easily in dark scenes, the flash is used for auto-focus auxiliary light flashing before shooting, which is more accurate than manual focus mode.

If you are worried that the shutter speed will decrease, it is recommended to use a tripod. In addition, this mode pays attention to the imaging effect of people, and the aperture is close to full opening. When you don't want to blur the background, you can use the wide-angle lens or the wide-angle focal section of the zoom lens to shoot.

It should be noted that the shutter speed will decrease in portrait mode at night, and it is easy to shake when shooting without using a tripod. If you are worried about shooting failure, you can use hand-held night scene mode or scene intelligent automatic mode for shooting.

Example of hand-held night scene mode shooting:

If you are worried about hand shaking, you can also use the hand-held night scene mode and set the flash to flash.

Macro photography of flowers

Shooting conditions

Using lens: EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM macro.

Shooting mode: automatic exposure with aperture priority (F4,11600 seconds)

White balance: automatic

Sensitivity: ISO 200

Pay attention to the direction of light and shadow, and find the position that can reflect the beauty of flowers.

Whoever picks up the camera wants to make the flowers more beautiful. But it is actually very difficult to shoot flowers, such as focusing and blurring, and selecting light, all of which should be carried out at the same time.

The first thing to decide when shooting flowers is the position of the light source. In most shooting scenes, it is common to shoot along the light, that is, the sun is behind the photographer. However, for flower photography that needs close-up, such a positional relationship will cause flowers to be completely shrouded by the photographer's own shadow. Therefore, when shooting flowers, it is best to choose the light shot vertically at noon, backlight or semi-backlight to shoot.

It is very important to determine the position of light when shooting flowers, and then determine the shooting position and angle according to the position of shadow. You can choose the shooting mode according to your personal preference. If you want to use background blur flexibly, it will be more convenient to use Av (Aperture Priority Auto Exposure) mode. It should be noted that when shooting at macro, the shooting distance should be close and not too blurred. If it is too vague, the subject itself will become unclear.

It is necessary to narrow the aperture to maintain a certain depth of field, make the overall shape of the flower clear, and only use blur to filter out the messy background. In addition, manual focusing is more suitable for this kind of shooting than automatic focusing. Focusing needs to be accurate to millimeter level, which is safer to confirm with human eyes. And sometimes the autofocus point and the position that the photographer wants to focus on are not necessarily the same. However, if autofocus locking is used in macro shooting, the possibility of inaccurate focusing is very high, which is not recommended here.

It is suggested to use real-time display shooting and manual focusing. It is often windy when shooting outdoors, which will bring some difficulties to manual focusing, but shooting beautiful flowers with precise focus in this way will bring more special touches to the photographer.

Point 1:

Use of macro lens

(left) EF 100mm f/2.8L is a USM macro.

(right) EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM macro

The focal length of macro lens can be divided into 100mm and 60mm, that is, the shooting distance is different. Generally speaking, it is more convenient to choose 60mm when shooting flowers nearby and use a lens with a focal length of 100mm when shooting flowers in the distant sea of flowers.

The second point:

Understand the characteristics of fuzzy foreground and fuzzy background and use them flexibly.

The degree of blur is determined by factors such as focal length and aperture. The blur of the subject's foreground is often worse than the blur of the background. If we can use foreground blur flexibly, we can better show the charm of the subject.

The third point:

Flexible use of tripod and spherical pan/tilt

The tripod is very conducive to precise focusing, and the tripod head on which the camera is fixed is actually very particular. When taking macro photography, it will be more convenient to choose a spherical pan/tilt that can adjust the angle freely, and this pan/tilt is generally portable and easy to carry.

The fourth point:

The trick to finding the right topic

Flowers don't bloom everywhere. Especially in the city, it is a bit difficult to find flowers by yourself. The place where flowers are concentrated should be a botanical garden with a greenhouse. If it is macro photography, the background is often blurred, and it is basically impossible to see that it was taken in a greenhouse.

The fifth point:

The trick to determining composition

In the composition of flower photography, if you shoot large flowers, you usually take the stamen as the center, because the focus position will also have a great impact on the picture effect, so you need to focus properly and correctly.

Use a reflector to eliminate unnecessary shadows.

In order to eliminate the shadow in front of you, you can use a reflector when taking macro photography under the condition of backlight or semi-backlight. However, it is more troublesome to use a large reflector when shooting people. You should choose a small and portable reflector. Photographers can also paste silver paper on thick paper boards and make their own reflectors. A4 paper size will be more convenient to use.

Put the camera on the tripod and your hands will be free. When focusing, you can operate the shutter button with one hand and the reflector with the other, observe the viewfinder, and find a position with good reflection effect to shoot. In this case, using a tripod is very beneficial to shooting.
