Avatar director Eva did not give a detailed explanation in the film. There are many explanations, one of which is as follows:

What is Eywa?

In the eyes of the Na 'vi people, the Virgin Ava is their spiritual sustenance, maintaining the balance of nature, a bit like Gaia, the goddess of the earth who is no longer worshipped. Later, female scientists made a more scientific explanation: this "god" is real. Then all neutral creatures fought back, which also confirmed the existence of Eywa. Some people explain that Eywa is the nerve center of the whole planet network, or the immune system, and this counterattack is the self-defense of the immune system. But this explanation is equivalent to the default that Eywa is an unconscious system. However, the film emphasizes the divinity of Ava, and the guidance of the protagonist and the voices of countless ancestors all show that Ava is conscious.
