Jiaxing dialect

Commonly known as "Jiaxing gossip". It is a dialect of Wu dialect and belongs to Wu dialect Taihu Pian Su Hujia Xiao Pian. It is basically interoperable with other dialects of Northern Wu, such as Suzhou dialect, Shanghai dialect, Huzhou dialect, Shaoxing dialect, Hangzhou dialect (Hangzhou old town dialect), Quzhou dialect (Quzhou urban dialect), etc.

Historical evolution

The difference between Jiaxing dialect, Suzhou dialect and Shanghai dialect is very small, because it was always under the jurisdiction of Suzhou before the Tang Dynasty, and Xiuzhou Prefecture was established in the Tang Dynasty and broke away from Suzhou; while Shanghai used to belong to? Songjiang Prefecture was once under the jurisdiction of Jiaxing, and its language is mainly Jiaxing dialect. After the establishment of Songjiang Prefecture, the dialects in the Songjiang area developed independently on the basis of Jiaxing dialect, forming Songjiang dialect, which was relatively underdeveloped among the Wu dialects. Later, today's Shanghainese dialect was formed.

Characteristics

Wu dialect and Xiang dialect (referring to Old Xiang dialect) are the earliest dialects among the seven dialect families of Chinese, so Wu dialect has retained quite a lot of ancient sounds.
