About the author:
Shen Congwen (1902-1988) was originally named Shen Yuehuan, and his pen names were Xiu Yunyun, Jiachen, Shangguanbi, Xuanruo, etc. His nickname was Maolin, and his courtesy name was Chongwen. He lived in Fenghuang County, Hunan Province. Han nationality, but with some Miao ancestry.
Shen Congwen is a famous contemporary writer, historical relic researcher, and representative of Beijing School novels. At the age of 14, he joined the army and wandered around the border areas of Hunan, Sichuan and Guizhou. He began literary creation in 1924. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, he taught at the Southwest Associated University and from 1931 to 1933, he taught at Shandong University.
He returned to Peking University to teach in 1946. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he worked at the Museum of Chinese History and the Institute of History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, mainly engaged in the research of ancient Chinese costumes. He died of illness in Beijing in 1988.
