Brief introduction of Jie Hailong

Autobiography of Jie Hailong

1980 began to teach myself photography. After nearly ten years of hard work, my photography skills have been improved obviously, and I have also been selected and won prizes in various photography competitions and film festivals at home and abroad. But the subject matter is chaotic and has no personal style. 1990 I went to the countryside to engage in art again and found that many children in poor areas could not go to school for education because of their living difficulties. Their desire for learning deeply touched me, so I decided to record them with a camera and tell people in rich areas that as long as you can reach out and help them, these children will not become illiterate. I'm looking around for information. Knowing the current situation of rural basic education in China and knowing that there are 200 million illiterates in China, one out of every four illiterates in the world comes from China, which has a great influence on me.

199 1 at the beginning, I bought a map, pieced together some money, and began to interview remote areas. That year, I took hard-seat trains, tractors, donkey carts and other means of transportation and went to the mountains specially. For a whole year, I ran 12 provinces, 28 counties and 65438+. Run south when it is hot. When it's cold, run north and experience the children's hard work. Spending is tight, so I live in my hometown. Dinner is always two cakes and a bowl of vegetable soup, and sometimes you have to walk forty or fifty miles a day.

In fact, the hard conditions are not my biggest difficulty. Many people can't understand this topic. At that time, the society advocated the main theme, shooting more and showing more bright side. However, this topic records the old and shabby, the old and the poor, the photos can not be published, and it also causes trouble. But I firmly believe that it makes sense to do so. I can't see these children wandering outside the campus. Many children cry to go to school, so they go up the mountain to cut firewood, or catch some scorpions to sell, or cut their nails and hair for money, which is so touching. In any case, we must insist on doing so. At that time, many friends started businesses and made a fortune, but I think as long as I do this well, I won't waste my camera, which is a meaningful thing for the society.

In the countryside, I'm always in trouble and I'm left out in the cold everywhere. Local leaders don't want me to "expose" their doors, and they don't think about what benefits these pictures can bring to them. In this way, the progress is very slow, the car can't be found, and walking is a common occurrence. Another time, I took a photo in a shabby school that had just rained. The children cleaned up the stagnant water in the classroom with broken pots and broken bowls, but I never wanted to be misunderstood by a young teacher. I was covered in mud during the scuffle and felt very sad. I am preoccupied with the children and teachers in poor mountainous areas. Their life is very hard, and their monthly salary is less than tens of yuan (and I have to pay for the children who can't afford the tuition). However, when they see me taking pictures, they are always unhappy, afraid of losing face to the society and obstructing them in every way. In this way, climbing mountains and wading, going through hardships and hardships, were infected by the eyes of those poor children everywhere. Often a sad story does not melt, and another sad story is absorbed in the heart. At first, I couldn't help giving them some change, but after all, I couldn't solve the practical problem. I often think that I must shoot more and run more; Let them get help as soon as possible.

I often live with teachers in rural areas and listen to their sad stories, and I am often moved by their determination to educate in rural areas.

1April 1992, I enlarged all the negatives by 40, and sent them to many people around me for review to listen to their views and feelings. All the people who saw the photos have a common feeling: to donate money for these children. Especially the "little girl with big eyes", anyone who sees it will be infected. At that time, all kinds of news media reported that the effect was unexpected. They sent the donation to the China Youth Development Foundation and received hundreds of millions of yuan in less than eight months. Many people wrote on the money order: "Please transfer the money to the little girl with big eyes". Sometimes you can receive tens of thousands of yuan a day. I am very excited to see this scene. I didn't think these photos would be made public, but I didn't expect that they would trigger a huge potential charity force in society. Most of these people are ordinary people, and their lives are not rich, but there is no room for others to be more difficult than them. So I started to organize a solo exhibition while the iron was hot, so that more people could understand the current situation and participate.

1992 10 My photo exhibition entitled "Project Hope Photography Documentary" was exhibited in Beijing and Taipei at the same time, which was unprecedented on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The exhibition in Beijing is part of the China Photography Art Festival. At that time, there were 13 and 4 large-scale film screenings at the same time, and the famous Lao Ping and many famous foreign photographers also participated. Authors of domestic film festivals include Wu Yinxian and Master Jian Qingfu. And I am nobody, so the film festival is held in the corridor. Unexpectedly, the photo caused a strong response. During 10 days, tens of thousands of people flocked to the exhibition board and lingered. Many old people are wiping their tears when they visit, and they are deeply touched. Many primary and middle school students line up to visit. They put money on the ground, and ten thousand people signed to cheer for the film festival. They spoke highly of their works and expressed sincere moral support for Project Hope. I felt the great power of photography for the first time and realized the significance of my career for the first time.

Ten days later, the film festival ended. North China Oilfield moved my film screening to the oilfield to continue, and then there was a climax of helping out-of-school children in pairs. A wedding photo studio in Wuhan held a celebration. The boss canceled the planned banquet and used the money to hold the Hope Project Film Festival, which had a good effect. After that, the film festival went on tour in Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Qingdao, Shanghai, Hefei and other places, and wherever it went, it was a sensation.

My film exhibition was held in three major cities on Taiwan Province Island, sponsored by China Times. It was exhibited in Taibei, Taichung and Kaohsiung for more than 80 days. My cover photo was published in some publications and reported continuously with the title of "The Most Influential Photographer in China", which caused a sensation in Taiwan Province Province.

Seeing this effect, my determination is even greater. Donations continue to flow, increasing by hundreds of millions every year. My photos are also hung on the main streets of major cities, and every carriage of the Beijing subway train is covered with posters I took.

During the period of 1994, I donated the manuscript fee for taking photos to five out-of-school children in Qinghai Province. The children wrote that they didn't know whether to call me uncle or grandpa, and they didn't know where to work. Thank you for your concern and help. 1997 I donated 50,000 yuan from the personal camera auction for this group of topics to Project Hope.

1In August, 994, CCTV Oriental Time and Space produced a special program "The Son of the East" for me. After the broadcast, the phone kept calling. I took a taxi and the driver recognized me. They entrusted me to transfer the donation to the children in the mountain area. Many newspapers and magazines published articles about me. During that time, I received thirty or forty letters from readers every day, some donated money, and some provided me with interview clues, all of which said that I had done an indispensable good deed.

1994 10, my photo album I want to go to school was published. I distributed the album to party and government leaders at all levels and celebrities from all walks of life. They all donated money to varying degrees. Many party and family leaders also donated money to build Hope Primary School in Shazang and other places.

1transferred to China Youth Daily as a reporter at the end of 992. Over the past few years, I took advantage of my business trip to visit 26 provinces in China 100 counties, followed up and interviewed many heroes I photographed, learned about their recent situation, reported them in time, and received good results.

With the increase of "fame", newspapers, radio stations, TV stations, institutions, schools and enterprises keep looking for me. Some want my pictures, some call to report themselves, and some ask me to make a report. I also seize every opportunity to tell others the story behind each photo.

In the past eight years, I have been to Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, the United States and other places to do exhibitions and lectures. Every time I come back, I get a lot. In the United States, I made a live broadcast on the radio and returned to the exhibition site an hour later, where overseas Chinese had gathered. They said they cried after listening to the program, so they came to donate money. An old overseas Chinese in his seventies was very moved after receiving an original painting from me, and immediately donated120,000 US dollars to us as an education award fund.

Dozens of photos I took, involving out-of-school children, have all returned to school, and those involving dangerous classrooms have all been built into Hope Primary School. The head of the China Youth Development Foundation once said: "A photo of Hailong often attracts one school, or even more than one." He also said: "People know about Project Hope mostly through his photos. First of all, they were deeply moved by his works, so they gave their love. " As early as 1994, the photo of the little girl with big eyes was designated as the image symbol of Project Hope and registered as a trademark in the national industrial and commercial department, which is protected by law.

1994 65438+ 10, China Youth Development Foundation held a large-scale benefit performance of "Cross-century Bells" in the Great Hall of the People. My 56 works were exhibited in the auditorium, with the magnification of 0.8x 1.2. This is the first time that China has held a solo exhibition here.

1996 China photojournalism society awarded me the "Special Contribution Award". 1997 China Photographers Association awarded me the "Special Honor Award". 1998 people surrounded the CCTV economic channel special program "20 people in the 20 years of reform and opening up". At present, Project Hope has been carried out for nearly ten years, and all the children I interviewed have become knowledgeable young people. "Little girl with big eyes" has gone to high school and was elected as an alternate member of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Youth League. With its successful experience, Hope Project tells people that this is an influential event in the 50 years since the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC). At present, Project Hope has received a donation of 65.438+78.2 million yuan to help build more than 7,000 Hope primary schools and help 220 million out-of-school children. More importantly, the party and the government also gave a very high evaluation of Project Hope.
