What is the jpg format?

JPG (also known as JPEG) is a common image file format, which is a simple static compression format.

The goal of JPG is to reduce the size of the image file while maintaining the image quality as much as possible. This compression method is realized by deleting some details and redundant data in the image. Due to the nature of lossy compression, the size of JPG image files is usually very small, which is suitable for transmission and storage on the network.

JPG image format is widely used in digital photography, network images, e-mail attachments, social media and other applications that need high-quality images. Although JPG images can provide a higher compression ratio, every time you save JPG images again, some image quality will be lost, so saving JPG images for many times may further reduce the image quality.

It should be noted that JPG is a lossy compression format, which is suitable for saving photos and color images, but it is not suitable for saving images containing words and lines, because lossy compression may lead to blurred and distorted images. For images that need to save words and lines, it is recommended to use lossless compression format (such as PNG) to ensure image quality.

Other picture formats

1 and JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) are commonly used lossy compression formats, which are suitable for storing photos and complex images. Due to the use of lossy compression, the file size of JPEG format is relatively small, but there will be some losses in repeated saving.

2.GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) is a lossless compression format, which is suitable for storing simple graphics and animations. GIF format supports transparent background and multi-frame animation, but the color table is limited to 256 colors, which is not suitable for storing complex images.

3.PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless compression format, which is suitable for storing images with transparent background. PNG format supports more colors and better image quality, but the file size is usually larger than JPEG format.

4.BMP (Bitmap) is an uncompressed format, which is suitable for storing the original data of images. The file size of BMP format is large, which is not suitable for network transmission and storage, but it can retain the high-quality details of the image.

These image formats have their own advantages and uses in different application scenarios. Choosing the right image format depends on your needs and actual situation.
