In order to protect the pink starlings still brooding in the cracks of gravel, the road construction at National Highway 2 18 194 km (Dunna Expressway section) in Nileke County, Yili, Xinjiang was suspended for one month from June 26th. The construction party built a fence to protect the nesting area and installed a signboard.

On 25th and 26th, the State Forestry and Grassland Bureau issued two Weibo to pay attention to this matter, asking the construction party to stop work as soon as possible, and the local forestry department urged them to follow up.

Today, a billboard was hung at the nesting site of the pink starling.

Workers built fences to protect pink starlings and newly hatched chicks.

"Because of the recent heavy rain, in order to protect the safety of birds, the construction party cleaned up the gravel on the mountain to prevent stones from falling and hurting birds. At present, no individuals who have died of birds due to human or mechanical reasons have been found. " Weibo of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration wrote.

Jiang, the chief engineer in charge of the section of Xinjiang Youjian Construction Company, told this newspaper that about a month ago, the workers found many birds with black and pink feathers flying on the section, which they had never seen before and did not know what species they were, so they didn't pay attention.

"On the 24th, a worker said that when a photographer was shooting a bird, he found that (it was a pink myna) was nesting in a crack in the stone and suggested that we stop working. The next day, another volunteer called and suggested (stopping work). We decided to stop work urgently that day. " Jiang said to him.

Some volunteers reported that there were about tens of thousands of pink starlings found at the scene and a large number of young birds were born. After half a month to a month, the young bird can leave the nest and move to a new home.

According to public information, the pink starling is a "three-owned animal" protected by the state, beneficial or of great economic and scientific research value, ranking in passeriformes and Yanidae. Pollen starlings, whose main food is locusts, are the main force of biological control of locusts. It preys on locusts 120- 180 every day, which effectively protects the grassland ecological environment in Xinjiang.

In addition, it is a migratory bird, inhabiting eastern Europe and central and western Asia in winter and migrating to western Xinjiang in May.

According to Jiang, the road section has been blasted many times since 20 17, resulting in a large amount of gravel accumulation on the roadside. At present, the closed road section is about 300-400 meters long. Except this section, the remaining sections of the third bid section have been opened. It is estimated that the work will be stopped for one month, and the project cost will increase by about10 million yuan.
