Is the place of worship decorated with peony flowers?
With the introduction of Indian Buddhism into China, it also introduced the form of offering flowers to the Buddha, which is called "offering flowers" in Buddhism. At first, lotus was mostly used for Buddhist flower arrangement, but with the China and secularization of Buddhism, peony was gradually used for Buddhist flower arrangement from the Tang Dynasty, forming two different styles.
The flower arrangement in the daily life of Buddhist monks expresses the realm of emptiness, dust, selflessness, purity and compassion. As the saying goes, "One flower and one world, one leaf and one bodhi". In the "Six Ancestors Map" painted by Lu Lengjia in the Tang Dynasty, a bamboo flower was placed next to a Lohan, and two peony flowers were inserted in a flowerpot. The color is pure white and clean, and Zen is realized in silence. Another example is "The Man in the Mustard Garden", in which two portraits of Sakyamuni and A?vagho?a are painted. Peony is put in a small bottle, and incense burners are put on several tables. There is only one flower, but it sets off an ethereal and detached Zen mind.
A short story about peony flowers
According to legend, Huang Zushang is not rich, and it is often passed down from generation to generation. Ms Huang often goes to Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, Putuo Mountain in Nanhai and Kannonji to burn incense and worship Buddha. She is happy with the donation. The pious heart touched the abbot of Lingyin Temple. In order to thank Mrs. Huang, I specially sent a peony flower to wish wealth and peace. A clever young monk personally sent it to the Huang family, holding the peony flower in his hand. It is said that peonies are not allowed to fall on the road. In order to welcome this peony, the Huang family specially paved a stone road from home to the entrance of the village, hung red and green colors for the peony, planted it in a large flat jar in front of the hall, and carefully maintained it from generation to generation as a "family heirloom given by the Buddha"
