About the author

Leo Leoni was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on May 5, 1910. His father was a Belgian Jewish businessman and his mother was a soprano singer. Because his family is near an art museum, and his uncles are architects, painters, and art collectors, he has been immersed in a rich artistic atmosphere since he was a child. Since the age of 13, he has traveled to the United States and Italy with his family.

Received a doctorate in economics in 1935. In 1945, a wave of anti-Semitism broke out in Europe, and they were forced to flee the United States with their families. Leoni is a talented and unfettered artistic genius, proficient in painting, sculpture, graphic design, printing, ceramics, photography... He was the design director of Fortune magazine in the United States for 10 years.

Humanism and rationalism run through his works from beginning to end. Although Leoni was already 49 years old when he started writing picture books, he ushered in a new era of picture books. His picture books have won numerous awards, among which "One Inch Worm", "Little Black Fish", "Afo the Field Mouse" and "Alexander and the Clockwork Mouse" won the American Caldecott Medal four times in 1961, 1964, 1968 and 1970 respectively.
