How did the Stone Forest come into being?

Stone forest, also known as karst landform, consists of many tall limestone columns. Its formation is mainly due to more than two groups of cracks in the vertical direction after limestone is squeezed by force, which makes the rock divided into grids on the plane.

Later, water and living things dissolved downward along these cracks. With the deepening and expansion of cracks, the stone pillars gradually separated, and then exposed to the surface through structural uplift, and then combined together to form a stone forest.

Among them, Shilin, an underground river south of Yunnan Road, was lifted out of the surface and turned into a dry valley and stone forest because of the rising ground.

The formation of Shilin is a favorable combination of many factors such as geology, climate and hydrology, and even a coincidence result. Without any aspect, it is impossible to form a stone forest.

Extended data:

Stone Forest was formed 270 million years ago and is the essence of karst landforms in the world. With the longest evolutionary history, the widest distribution area, complete types and unique forms, the Paleozoic karst landform community in the world is known as "the first wonder in the world".

Shilin Scenic Area, located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, covers an area of 350 square kilometers, with beautiful scenery and rich customs. The natural scenery here is particularly charming because of the touching legend of Ashima girl. The scenic spot is composed of Stone Forest, Black Turquoise (Ancient Stone Forest), Longfei Waterfall (Dadie Water), Changhu Lake, Guishan Mountain, Moon Lake, Strange Wind Tunnel, etc. It is famous for its masculinity, strangeness, danger, beauty, seclusion, elegance and spaciousness.
