What is "acid-free mounting"?

Compared with the picture mounting process with preservation value, acid-free mounting is just a abbreviation. Developed and mature museums, cultural relics protection, art market and even family photo preservation abroad all adopt acid-free products for maintenance and mounting. In China, people don't understand because the market is immature!

As can be seen from these figures, the painting accessories supplied by foreign civil markets and even children's markets are acid-free. In acid-free mounting, except the pictures must be printed on acid-free paper, all materials in mounting must be acid-free and lignin-free, pens for artists must be acid-free, bags for packaging must be acid-free, and gloves for carrying pictures must be acid-free.

Acid-free mounting can also be said to be collection-level or museum-level mounting! Generally speaking, there are several characteristics:

English name: Archival, also known as acid-free. The material has no chemical change, yellowing, hardening, aging, air permeability, moisture accumulation and stickiness.

Acid-free and neutral

As far as paper is concerned, materials with pH above 7 are called acid-free if they are treated with neutral buffer containing 3% ~ 5% weak alkalinity and contain no lignin or sulfur.

Suitable buffer in professional preservation, used in papermaking process, added to paper pulp to neutralize acidity, to help offset acidic substances in the environment and prevent these acids from damaging the collection.

Lignin free

Lignin is considered to destroy the quality of paper. If it is removed during papermaking, high quality paper will be made.

There is no completely fixed way to mount the acid-free collection, and it is not common to mount it with aluminum-plastic board, but the back glue must be acid-free professional glue.

As for the outer frame, because most wooden frames in China have not been deacidified, it is not suitable for long-term preservation. According to the principle of preservation, it is recommended to use imported professional collection-level picture frames. You can post some certificates from galleries or authors on the back of the picture frames, and of course you can prove the value of the works in other ways.
