The true story of the abyss of death
Frank McGuire has rich diving experience. For several months, he has been diving and exploring near the Guinea Sahara along the South Pacific coast, and has also conducted some cave explorations. However, these small-scale explorations can't satisfy mcguire's ambition, because there is a huge cave that has not yet been discovered.
Known as the "mother of caves", this cave is the largest, deepest, most complex and dangerous cave in the world, and also the most magnificent and beautiful cave. In order to become a famous explorer and create a world record of human cave diving, mcguire introduced investment and found a group of elite soldiers to prepare for cave exploration.
Everything started very smoothly and all the players showed good professional quality. All the equipment is top-notch, and all the plans look seamless. However, with the deepening of the expedition, nature began to show its strength gradually-the roads became narrower and narrower, the water flowed faster and faster, and the underwater terrain became more and more complicated.
At this time, Guinea was in the rainy season, and a strong tropical storm hit the country. The continuous rainstorm caused the river to rise, and the groundwater level also rose. Rainwater flows backward into the depths of the cave, forming a "flood" underground.
The huge flood became an obstacle to the expedition. After losing several members, mcguire, Josh and their benefactor, Carl Heley, faced with the shortage of food and drinking water, they had to change their original escape plan of walking back to the cave. Only by diving can they find their way to the ocean in the maze of cave water.

Behind the scenes production of the abyss of death
First, the underwater audition.
The audition of actors is held in the director's office or studio. But because of the particularity of Cave, the director moved the audition place to the swimming pool.
Moreover, the actors who pass the audition have to undergo strict diving and physical training, because in Grierson's vision, all the stunts should be done by the actors themselves. Because underwater shooting is quite dangerous and unexpected, only by exercising well can accidents and dangers be avoided.
Second, the shooting process
Because Cameron's 3D camera is bulky, underwater photography is complicated, and sometimes it takes 12 hours to shoot continuously, and the available lens is still only 40 seconds to 1 minute.
A model of an underwater maze was built in the swimming pool of the studio, about 8×6 feet. In order to avoid sunlight, we choose to work at night. Because the camera is too heavy, it is obviously unrealistic to hold it underwater, so many large mechanical devices are found to fix and move it.
