Xu, photographer. Tongxiang, Zhejiang. Xu, honorary member of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, consultant of China Photographers Association and famous photographer, died in Beijing on the evening of October 27th, 2009, at the age of 93.

1933, he worked as a photography assistant in Shanghai Dentsu Film Company, Star Film Company and Northwest Film Company. Participated in the filming of Children of the Storm, Street Angels and The Storm. 1937 went to Yan 'an. He entered Kangda University the following year. Later, he joined Yan 'an Film Group and participated in the filming of the large-scale documentary Yan 'an and the Eighth Route Army. 1942, joined the China * * * production party. After War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's victory, he went to work in Northeast Film Studio. After People's Republic of China (PRC) was founded, he worked in Beijing Film Studio and Central News Recording Film Studio. He has served as the second to fourth member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the third director of the China Film Association, the third chairman of the China Photographers Association and the fourth executive director. He is a deputy to the Eighth National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the First to the Third National People's Congresses, and a member of the Fifth China People's Political Consultative Conference. The large-scale documentary "Liberated China", which participated in the editing and directing, won the Stalin Fund 1950. The photo includes Chairman Mao and Commander Zhu at work.

In 1930s, he worked in Shanghai's "Tianyi" and "Star" film companies, and served as a photography assistant for films such as The Robbery of Peach and Plum, God of Freedom, Storm Child and Street Angel, and participated in Shanghai's left-wing drama activities. After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he joined the Eighth Route Army in Taiyuan and went to Yan 'an for photography and publicity in the same year. After the liberation of the whole country, he continued to engage in photography leadership and creation, participated in the photography or directing work of documentaries such as Commander-in-Chief Chairman Mao and Zhu Liping, Preparatory Meeting for the New China People's Political Consultative Conference, and Liberation of China, and published picture books Road and Yangtze River (editor-in-chief), published oral autobiography and held photography exhibitions at home and abroad. He has won the first prize of Stalin Prize, the second-class national flag medal of the North Korean government, the first prize of excellent film of the Ministry of Culture, and the National Book Award. He has served as chairman and consultant of China Photographers Association, member of China People's Political Consultative Conference, member of the Executive Committee of All-China Federation of Trade Unions, honorary president of China Photo Library, etc.

His photographic works have a strong realistic style, permeated with idealism and romanticism, giving people inspiration and artistic enjoyment, which has had a certain impact on the development of news photography and news documentary in China.
