Personal Experience

Growing up in Sweden, Hosk submitted a proposal to a high school model after her father submitted photos to various modeling agencies in Sweden when she was 13; She started modeling at 14. She did do some modeling in high school but decided to focus mainly on her studies instead (she did have some notable work with Guess and other companies, though). After graduation, she decided to continue her career in the Swedish Women's Basketball League. Hosk commented that the level of play in the Swedish Professional Basketball League is on par with that of the WNBA, and that interest in Swedish sports is not great in the United States. Although she eventually gave up modeling for professional basketball, Hosk has said that the intense rigor and travel of the practice (playing basketball 8 hours a week) helped prepare her for the physical and travel demands of the modeling world.

After playing professional basketball for two years, she began to receive many job offers and soon moved to New York City to begin modeling full-time. Some writers have speculated that her work with Victoria's Secret is what propelled her to the top of the fashion industry, but Hosk also identified speculation about her work with photographer Ellen von Unwerth in the campaign.
