1. You should consider using the flash at any time, except for a few cases where the natural light source is perfect. This perfection includes illumination, light quality, light ratio, color temperature, color tone, modeling and so on. In fact, it is difficult to achieve complete satisfaction with natural lighting conditions. So the use of flash is actually very frequent.

The flash should have a certain TTL metering function, which is more convenient to use, so that our compensation calculation can start from a relative value instead of an absolute value, which is labor-saving and accurate. However, various advanced TTL functions are not necessarily required. In fact, these functions not only limit the improvement of accuracy, but also limit the turn of light, which is harmful to the meaning of words. Therefore, a lamp with stable ttl function is enough, and various TTL functions can be accurately compensated after being familiar with their performance. In principle, it is impossible to completely avoid compensation, just as it is unrealistic for a camera's metering system to completely deviate from exposure compensation. If I had a choice, I would rather have a lamp with enough power, stable color temperature and shaking my head; I don't want a lamp with advanced TTL function that I can't control anything (Canon 220EX is a typical example).

3. The flash should rarely be in the state of lighting the main body, so it is rarely in various advanced TTL states. Similarly, it is hard to imagine doing flash photography without flash compensation. In fact, it takes a lot of calculation and experience to achieve different textures and levels, to achieve different light ratios and tones, and to cooperate with ambient light. This calculation is not the calculation between flash index, ISO and distance aperture, just as it is not the calculation of sunshine 16 principle, but the calculation of compensation relative value, similar to the calculation of 11-zone exposure method. The metaphor is clear at a glance. So what's the difference between using a lamp without flash compensation and using a stupid machine to give control to the machine completely? It is unrealistic that the metering system of the camera is completely separated from the exposure compensation. If I had a choice, I would rather have a lamp with enough power, stable color temperature and shaking my head; I don't want a lamp with advanced TTL function that I can't control anything (Canon 220EX is a typical example).

5. With regard to the use of light, in addition to correct exposure, there is also a very important trick, that is, light quality and color. Different themes need different light to express different creative purposes. Because of the small luminous area, the flash can easily achieve tough light. But we don't always need strong light. At this time, accessories that can change the quality of light are very important. Maybe we need soft light, strong directional light and so on. Therefore, things like jumping lights, anti-beating, reflector, soft box, honeycomb, condenser, reflective card and soft cover are essential items, which are used almost as soon as the lights are used. On the other hand, the color temperature we need is not necessarily 5500K, and the hue we need is not necessarily pure white. Therefore, the color filter used in the flash is also an essential accessory, often with an emotional light source, which will bring strong emotional rendering to the expression of our theme. Therefore, the use of lamps without these accessories is far from the most flexible and interesting function of flash photography.
