Most of the documentary photographers who became famous in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China mainly shot war themes, or were related to shooting valuable political content. Hong Rong (1828— 19 12) was an outstanding representative of the reformists in the late Qing Dynasty. 1847 studied in the United States, 1854 graduated from Yale university, becoming the first person in China to graduate from an American institution of higher learning. In the 12th year of Tongzhi (1873), Peruvian envoys came to China and signed a treaty with China to recruit Chinese workers.
