What is the name of the famous oil painting? It shows a white couple, and the man is holding a fork.
A black woman stood somewhere in the White House with a broom, with her back to the mop and the American flag. This is an explanation of this work. This photo was taken by Gordon Parks, a famous American black photographer and film director, in 1942. Model Ella Watson was a cleaning lady at the White House.
In the oil painting "American Gothic", the man's eyes look straight ahead, his lips are closed, his yellow thin face is very serious, and his round-rimmed glasses are meticulously placed on his nose. He has a fork in his muddy hand. From the composition point of view, this fork echoes the oval face of the character and the lines of the Gothic window behind the character.

Painting background:
This work was completed in 1930 during the Great Depression. American artists at that time refused the influence of European modernist art and went deep into the countryside to create realistic works, emphasizing a simple truth. This style was later called localism. After the exhibition of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in London was depressed, a large number of works by American localist artists were exhibited in the American painting world in the 1930s.
In fact, before Parks 12 years ago took this photo, a painter named grant wood spent two months painting an oil painting called American Gothic. Coincidentally, 1942 was the year when this photo was born and the year when Wood, who painted American Gothic oil paintings, died.
Author:
Grant wood studied painting in Paris and Munich, then avant-garde art centers, when he was in his twenties. He is very familiar with modernist painting and once created in impressionist style. But when Wood returned to the United States, he quickly gave up the modernist painting skills and means he acquired in Europe. His creation was influenced by the meticulous realistic painting of Flemish painter Van Dyke in the15th century.
He also added personal character and color, thus joining the trend of American localism painting. Although Wood's artistic origin is still European traditional painting, what he and other localist artists do is to liberate American native art from European cultural colonialism as much as possible.
Before the appearance of abstract Expressionism painting, it was an important attempt of American art independence. Although American Gothic has become a cultural symbol of the United States, localism painting has not occupied a particularly important position in the history of American art.
