April 13 is the first day of the Songkran Festival in Thailand. A large number of foreign tourists ignored the ban and gathered near Tha Pae Gate in the ancient city of Chiang Mai to splash water and have water fights.

Although there were volunteers and tourist police at the event, many tourists did not wear masks and still ignored the ban. After receiving the complaint, Colonel Pol Col. Phuwanat Duangdee of the Chiang Mai Main City Police Department led the military police to the scene to evacuate and persuade tourists in the area, asking them to abide by epidemic prevention rules and prohibit water fights.

It is understood that the incident took place at the water spray tunnel located on the side of the Tha Pae Gate moat. The surrounding area was crowded with tourists having water fights. The purpose of the tunnel was to spray water to cool down. Although there are slogans, they are all in Thai, causing misunderstanding among tourists. I thought I could splash water and have water fights here.

Currently, the Chiang Mai City Government has suspended the sprinkler system of the sprinkler tunnel to prevent tourists from misunderstandings. The police hereby remind the public and tourists that those who ignore the ban, splash water and start water fights can be fined up to 20,000 baht.

After patient persuasion by the on-site military police and tourism police, the tourists finally understood the epidemic prevention policy and happily dispersed after the water fight.
