Puyin City, Hubei Province, 1998, why did it change its name to chibi city?

In the southeast of Hubei Province, there is a place called chibi city, which used to be Puyin City. Now it is a county-level city managed by Xianning City, located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, bordering Wuhan in the north and Yueyang in the south. The total area of the jurisdiction 1700 square kilometers, with a total population of more than 500,000.

Chibi city changed its name to 1998. It was called Puyin for a long time before, with a long history. So why change it to its current name? Before talking about this question, let's take a look at the historical evolution of Chibi:

During the Xia and Shang Dynasties, this place belonged to Yunmengze, Jingzhou. The Western Zhou Dynasty was under the jurisdiction of Chu State. In the Warring States period, it was still under the jurisdiction of the State of Chu. The Qin dynasty began to implement the county system, which was under the jurisdiction of the south county. In the Western Han Dynasty, it was the jurisdiction of Jingzhou Nanjun. During the Three Kingdoms period, Pu Xian County was established here, which belonged to Wuchang County, Yunzhou, and this was the beginning of establishing a county here.

In the Western Jin Dynasty, Puyin County was under the jurisdiction of Changsha County of Jingzhou, and in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, it was changed to Baling County of Jingzhou. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Pu Xian County belonged to Baling County of Yunzhou firstly, and then to Jiangxia County, Shangjuan County and Yunzhou successively.

During the Sui Dynasty, Puyin County was under the jurisdiction of Jiangxia County in Jingzhou. During the Tang Dynasty, Pu Xian County had jurisdiction over Jiangxia County, Ezhou and Ezhou, Jiangnan Road. During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, it was under the jurisdiction of Ezhou.

In Song Dynasty, Puyin County was successively under the jurisdiction of Ezhou, Hubei Road, Jingzhou and Wuchang Army, Hubei Road. The Yuan Dynasty was under the jurisdiction of Wuchang Road in Huguang Province. From the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, it was always under the jurisdiction of Wuchang Prefecture, Hubei Province.

During the Republic of China, it belonged to Jianghan Road, Hubei Province, the first administrative supervision area of Hubei Province.

After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), Puyin County was the earliest subordinate to Mianyang, Daye and Xiaogan counties in Hubei Province. 1958, Puyin and Xianning merged into one county, and then divided and ruled it. 1986, Puyin County was upgraded to a county-level city, and 1998 was renamed as chibi city, which was under the jurisdiction of Xianning City.

As can be seen from the historical evolution of Pu Xian County, this place has been called Pu Xian since ancient times. According to textual research, the name of Puyin should be Puyin Lake in the Three Kingdoms Period, that is, Xiliang Lake in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Literally? Puyin? Two words mean Pucao Lake. So why did it change its name to Chibi in 1998?

On the one hand, as we all know, Chibi was a famous battlefield during the Three Kingdoms period in China, but because Puyin has not been well-known, it is also unfavorable to develop the tourism resources of Chibi. There are many places that have changed their names because of tourism development. For example, Huizhou mentioned earlier in Bian Xiao was renamed Huangshan City, Chongan was renamed Wuyishan City, and Dayong was renamed Zhangjiajie City.

On the other hand, see? Puyin? Two words, relatively uncommon, may be mistaken by many people, thus causing some confusion. So in 1998, with the approval of the state, Puyin changed its name to chibi city.
